The year the identity ot the Homecoming queen was kept secret until the hour of the assembly. Joan Hutchings received the honor, after which our guest speaker, Dr. MacCarty was introduced. The weather dampened everything, includ- ing floats and spectators, but there was a fine show of spirit in the turnout of the.pa- rade and game. We won our Homecoming game with Faribault, which made the event a happy and successful one. Loyal fans display their enthusiasm despite the weather. Zi' EQ. X Tv ef WINTER DANCE The annual Christmas Dance is always a memorable occasion, what with its fes- tive spirit and beautiful decorations. This year's theme was A Midwinter Night's Dream. The dance was held in the cafeteria from 9:00 to 12:00. The beauti- ful decorations enhanced the gay holiday mood and happy feeling. A large shining Christmas tree presided over the dance, with sparkling snowflakes dangling from above. Cn the wall was a large colorful mural. The couples danced to the music of the Esquires and refreshed themselves with punch and cookies. Judging from the happy expression this couple has, the dance is a success. The two are Janice Knowlton and Mark Pederson. The traditional punch is served at almost Either they're tired, or they're iust sitting one out to every dance. The girls made leis for their dates - some of them beautifully made and others made up from soup to nuts. The couples danced from 9:00 to ll:3O on February 17. Re- freshments were also served. The milk machines were covered with huge pineapples, and tish net interlaced with shells was hung from the ceiling to create a Hawaiian atmosphere. This girl is trying to help her date adiust his flower lei, which was the mark of the dance. The currently popular twist replaced the hula, despite the Hawaiian theme of the dance. ni? This well-attended event was ci highlight of the yeor. i 34 af lt's too bad there wasn't a talent scout in the area, this chorus line is really swinging! On April 13, the Spring Dance highlighted the JM cafeteria. The Rags to Riches theme carried through very well with the halt 84 halt decorations scheme. Even the punch was served in a bucket tor the rags and a regular punch bowl for the riches. A railroad track decorated the middle of the room. Dance music was furnished by the Fury's. These two couples were winners in that they were the 'best' dressed. Barb Sutherland and Gary Wendland are shown below, and Scott Jones and Nancy Ward are in the picture at the right. 35 SPRING DANCE Rehearsals aren't really as bad as everyone saysl FALL PLAY The first production of the Fine Arts Department, The Cat and the Canary, was presented on Oct. 27 and 28 under the direction ot Mr. Dwain Johnson. The story took place in an old mansion, a Typical setting for a mystery. The main characters were played by Kathie Han- son, Rick Thorkelson, and Joel Barker. Others included in the cast were Harry Harwick, Priscilla Lovestedt, Linda Clark, Bob Kunde, Jerry Bundy, and Terry Terrell. The Cat and the Canary was a combination of mystery, romance, and comedy which presented full entertainment and enjoyment for the audience. 36 Terry Terrell seems to enioy torturing Kathie Hanson during a rehearsal of the play. Being inducted into Thespians was indeed a highlight. John Marshall has a very fine dramatics department, and being a part of the Thespians was a well-deserved honor. The Thespians were organized as an honor society in recognition of the members. The club works to encourage the dramatic arts and to put on more and better productions. The qualifications for membership tall under a point system - ten points are required for membership, and one point equals ten hours ot work, either onstage or backstage. Mr. Burdette Moeller acts as advisor to the group. The officers of the club are: President: Gary Schattschneider Vice-President: Joel Barker Secretary: Bev Henderson Treasurer: Kathy Rowland Reporter: Glenn Purdue ' Ti-IEQPIANQ Make-up is one of the important aspects in the presentation of a play. His elixer ot youth supposedly made people's youth return again, The protessor's antics, along with the other humorous ac- tions, made the play a most entertaining one for the audience, The main characters were: R. Thorkelson as Dr. Relyea, J. Henderson as Phil Stanton, T. Terrell as General Burbeck, M. Anderson as Auntie, and B. Skow as Sylvia Relyea. 'wt .N 'NV' ' n Vi Q i Curly and Jud dramatize this fight scene in the 'dream sequence' of Oklahoma. The dancers did an ex- cellent job, and the sequence proved to be very effective. OKLAHOMA Laurey, played by Marilyn Lake, harmonizes with her leading man Curly, portrayed by Joel Barker. The two were a hit. The spectacular Oklahoma was presented at JM on Feb. 27 and 28..lt was one of the biggest successes ever to be presented, and everyone connected with it had o wonderful time working with it. The Rodgers and Hammer- stein production was co-directed by Mr. Johnson, dramat- ics coach, and Mr. Suddendort, musical-director. The main characters were enacted by J. Barker as Curly, M. Lake as Laury, C. McGinnis as Aunt Eller, T. Terrell as Jud, J. El- kins as Ado Annie, J. Henderson as Will, and H. Harwick as Ali Hakim. Almost 3900 people attended the two per- formances and gave the cast and crew a standing ovation at the last performance! 39 Scenery crew members wash flats in preparation for Dark Victory. SPRING PLAY Dr. Frederick Steele, played by T. Tervo, and Judith Traherne, played by J. Coclcrill, are shown in Miss Traherne's living room in JM's production of Dork Victory. Bleak settings add to the effect as Miss Tral'1erne's illness is explained to her. ASSEMBLIES The assemblies are one of the highlights in the well-planned program of JM's administration. The wide and varied subiects dealt with appeal to each and every one of us. John Marshall is very fortunate in having such a wide span of assembly programs which prove to be educational, timely, entertaining, and most of all, extremely interesting. Q t, One of the most interesting and educational assem- blies was the Nuclear Physics presentation by Floyd Davis. Everyone enioyed his down-to-earth explana- tions and experiments. A treat for JM was the visit of Governor Andersen, He almost didnt it, with the adverse weather conditions, but we were all happy to hear timely message. Those students who heard Senator Sandy Keith talk found it very interesting to hear about his past and new experiences in government. 1. 4- -og The special guest speaker at the MEA Convention in Rochester this year was Sam Levenson, who completely captivated and delighted his audience. One of the greatest trumpet players is the world was featured at a special concert sponsored by the Welhaven Music Co. This outstanding musician was Rafael Mendez. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council acts as an organization representing the student body of JM. The members attempt to act on the students' suggestions for school improvement. Many problems concerning the school and its administration are undertaken by the coun- cil, Class presidents, club presidents, and the foreign exchange students also participate in this organization along with the regular elected members. The Student Council sponsors various activities throughout the year. 44 .,-wg Y N err B HI-Y The Hi-Y held the interests of many fellows. Here some of them are shown at a work meeting The Hi-Y strives to create, maintain, and extend throughout the homes, school, and community high standards of Christian character. There are tour chapters: Dr. Howard Gray, Beta Rho, Alta Cur, and Delta Phi. Their activities usually include retreats with other Hi-Y clubs from the state. This year it was the Youth and Government program at the State Capitol. X 's.. UV, ,,,. J .14 These girls playing crack the whip obviously had to find some way to keep worm at the skating party. The Girls' Club is one of the most active clubs at JM. The real purpose of the organiza- tion is to have fun and to promote better friendship between the students. The worm relationship between a big sis and a little sis is most often a lasting one. Central Board, made up of 25 senior girls, guides and governs the clubs' activities, which are many. The girls honor their mothers and fathers at the annual Mother-Daughter Tea and the Father-Daughter Dance. The Mystery Sister program, one of the highlights of the club, and timely enioyable activities are inter-mingled throughout the year's program. Allison Bach goes by the saying, Speak softly and carry a big stick. A speaker who is from or has been in a foreign country talks at each meeting, usually accompanying his talk with slides, etc. The highlight at each year is the festive costume party. Miss Kloos is faculty adviser. Students dressed in costumes from foreign countries was an outstanding highlight at the IRC party Haruko and France had a ball with our good old American snowball fights. Bob Roesler spent the summer months before his senior year in the Philippines. Here he is shown chatting with some of the friends he made. The American Field Service strives to promote friendship and understanding among the countries of the world. The teenagers selected are 'ambassadors of good will.' The two foreign students at JM this year were France Donon of France and Haruko Egusa of Japan. Students of JM found it was very interesting and educational to hear the two girls talk about their countries, especially when they compared America to their home- lands. They were always asked, What do you like best about America? France and Harulco seemed to readily enjoy their stay here. We only hope that we gave them a better understanding of America. A.F.Q. The purpose of FTA is to acquaint high school and college students with the teaching field which they may be considering as a vocation. The Rochester chapter has many varied activities which prove interesting and also keep them busy. In the past year, student teachers at JM and a special-help teacher have spoken at the meetings. The club also took a trip to the University ot Minnesota, where they heard lectures on the teaching field. Student teaching helped the members decide what field of teaching they would like best. Other activities included a faculty tea, sponsorship of the Girl-Date-Boy Dance, a club picnic, and also a picnic for the JM chapter put on by the Junior College chapter. including bundling up children for outdoors - but it was interesting and enioyable. 50 The students who did practice teaching for FTA found their duties varied - Mr. Peterson, debate advisor, seems to be choking on something, or is he just vitally interested in the speaker's talk? DEBATE Debate oFfers a wide variety of interests and activities tor its participants. The goal, learning to speak effectively, is a challenging one, but it carries with it the promise of future success and self-improvement. The team, under the leadership of Mr. Peterson, holds tournaments with other teams, which adds greatly to their skill and experience. Debate had been absent from the curriculum for several years, but it got a start last year. It was under a test period this year - a beginning of organization. Phil Voxland acts as president of the group. Fred Mayo checks out his camera before taking pictures. The camera club has been in existence for two years. It is a hobby for some, and it also gives an idea of what professional photography would be like. The members have contests between themselves to see who can take and develop the best pictures. They also take pictures of many of the school functions. Fred Mayo is president of the club, and the advisor is Mr. Bruce Arntson. These two camera enthusiasts spend their spare time developing pictures Club members compare pictures and discuss the good and bad points. 52 To RAYOMS This radio enthusiast dons his headset and goes to work. RADIO CLUB The Radio Club, in its first year, has held work meetings every Saturday morning. This type of activity provides interesting work and enioyment for the club members. Their obiective is to create an interest in electronics, and also to help those who wish to earn an amateur license to be able to pass the examination. The club would eventually like to operate as an amateur radio station. Mr Blasczyk is advisor to the group. It would take an expert to get something out of this confusionl A club member takes a few min- utes to think about what he is doing. These boys, under the direction of Mr. Woodman, also take part in many FFA projects and occasionally go on trips. It was also asked to sing at the State Fair last summer, and of course, the highlight of the year was the presentation of Oklahoma Other divisions of the music department are the Chamber Singers, a group of select singers who perform at special occasions, and the Girls' Cho- rus, which grooms them in the basics of reading music and counting rhythms. Mr. Suddendorf is the director of the choir and head of the music department. 63 The band finally got their much-wonfed frip 'ro Canada. Here they are shown disembczrking from the froin. Led by the drum maior and three maiorettes, the band marches for all home football games - often through wind, rain, and cold - maintaining high quality through great enthusiasm. The band marches in the Homecoming and Memorial Day parades and presents three formal concerts a year. The John Marshall Symphony Orchestra is well trained in its ability to master the wide range of music that is performed. The three yearly concerts give the orchestra members a chance to show their improving talent and also enables others to hear JM's fine orchestra. Several members are selected each year to participate in the Select Orchestra at the Big 9 Music Festival. A4 x4 67 as 5 ll' l iv er-f 'r1 Putting out a newspaper requires much time and effort. Everything was set up for having it in either place - the stadium or the gym- nasium. Students hoped that the skies would smile upon the graduates as they walked slowly to the stadium, keeping in step to the strains of Pomp and Circumstancef' That wasn't the way it was to be, however, for the class of 1962 found itself ready and wait- ing inside the building minutes before the beginning ceremony.
