DR. MELVIN W. BARNES Typical of the efficient buildings which house the public schools of Oklahoma City, is this admin- istration building, Here are offices of the city superintendent and his assistants, the personnel office, the office of public relations, departmental co-ordinators and many other officials vital to the operation of our great city system. Dr. Melvin W, Barnes came to the Oklahoma City schools as assistant superintendent in August, l95O. He became superintendent in l957-58. His four years have been years of progress and achievement in all phases of public education. With the members of the Board of Education he lgas put Oklahoma City schools among the nation's est. The far-seeing, civic minded business men who make up the Board of Education have spent many hours, weeks, months, working for the youth of the city. They have toiled tirelessly to provide the best possible educational facilities from kindergarten through highschool. Many tasks face the administration each year-the need for additional teachers for the constantly increasing student population, for up-to-date methods and improved instruction, for replacement of out- moded equipment, provisions for more classrooms -and the ever-present question of keeping the best personnel and providing funds necessary for its employment. As the l96O-6l year closes, plans are al- ready underway for additional buildings and stepped-up education to fit the needs of today's young people. Few students fully understand the work done by this dedicated group. Only through results in the form of higher scholastic and moral attainment do they receive payment and ap- preciation. ,- ,,..,.,,.., mmf
