math class Besides teaching the basic mathe- matical computations, the Math De- partment attempted to train stu- dents to reason and to think. Prac- tical application of mathematical principles was also stressed. Algebra, geometry, and trigo- nometry composed the traditional academic course in math. Students in the advanced placement program took, in addition to these courses, analytical geometry and calculus. General math was offered in all grades. Parents who don’t understand their children’s homework became more common this year as “new” math, at first confusing to the stu- dents, was taught on the high school level.
