A much more important thing, it prepares us to live more humanely in the present and to meet rather than to foretell the future.” —Dr. Carl Becker This quotation was a prime motivating factor in the history department this year. By studying world history and geography, freshman pu- pils gained a background for the more detailed upperclass- man courses. Although history was not required in the tenth grade, a course about twentieth-century problems was offered to aid students in comprehending their modern world. The backgrounds of the United States and of Vir- ginia were studied in the eleventh grade, while seniors studied government, economics, and communism. Although each course was unique, all contributed to de- veloping understanding and communication. 22

English classes teach appreciation To communicate, to appreciate— English students developed these abilities through specially molded courses. Skills of communication, which included listening, were em- phasized in all grades. To stress originality, fourteen classes participated in the Composi- tion Laboratory Program, which employed theme readers.
