ll I I I l I l l ltr I What's with oI'summer school I There were 733 students enrolled in MarshaIl's summer school program, 33 of these pupils graduated. Drivers Education has always been the summer school class with the largest enrollment. This remained true through the I976 year. Typing was offered for the first time last summer. There were enough students who signed up for Home Economics classes for the I976 summer school program, but we did not get it set up in time, commented Fred 'W-df Jones. The only problem in summer school is the fall students at JMHS who goto a school closer to their homes in the summer. These stu- dents don't let the Marshall guid- ance department know about the classes attended during the sum- mer. The guidance department does not know of the classes taken during the summer and this messes up the fall scheduling. I Trips taken There are different camps, insti- tutes and trips that students go to because of their different clubs, sports squad or iust because of their individual responsibility. During the summer the Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders went to a cheerleading camp at Taylor University. Each squad went to three differ- ent classes each day consisting of gymnastics, cheers and pom-pom routines. We learned new motions, cheers and new stunts on the mini tramp, states J.V. cheerleader Vicki Williams. We received a trophy, exclaimed Elaine Houck as she explained that each squad was evaluated for ribbons and trophies. Last spring vacation, 27 students from several different Spanish classes went to Mexico. The total cost was 5375.95 and was chaper- oned by Mrs. Sawicki, Mrs. Evans, Mr. Jefferson and Mrs. Royce. I went because I thought it would be fun, I like to travel and I wanted to see how different Mex- ico is from the U.S., says Julie Bush. While in Mexico the students went to Acapulco where they saw a bullfight. They also went to Taxco and Mexico City. The first week in August a few people from the band went to a band camp on the south side of Purdue University where they prac- ticed most of the day. They also met many other students and had a lot of fun. I went because I wanted to improve on my music and I was to go, explained Gary Davis. The most interesting part of the whole camp was a nature hike with our counselors, who were Mark Hayden and Dennis Waggoner, in 19 6-77 says Bob Weaver. This summer one of our Patriot Personalities, Darren Harrison, went to a leadership camp. This was the first year for the camp that was sponsored by the Red Cross. I didn't know too much about leadership, says Darren Harrison. By going, not only has he learned about leadership but he has also set a new achievement for the Patriot Personalities in the years to come. He has been asked to go back next year to be a senior coun- selor. Last August there was a German Convention at East Michigan Uni- versity. l went to learn about German cultures and to have fun, says Edith Speights. This summer Pam Adams, co-edi- tor of the yearbook, went to Indi- ana University where she learned the structure and how to prepare a yearbook. Nine other yearbook and newspaper staffers also attended. In a way it was required but mostly I wanted to go, says Pam. Most of the students that go on trips or to camps or institutes do not go because it's required but because they want to learn and to have fun. 13 uk, dd If: ' v .
