Track team run strong Marshall's track teams had a good year with the girls team finish- ing a strong eight and one season and the boys team with a respecta- ble seven and six record. Senior Diane Christensen and Sophomore Tanya Slaughter led the girls team in placing second in the city and sectionals and fifth in the regionals. Diane and Tanya set school and city records in the high lump and hurdles, respectively. The medley relay team also set a city record. Seniors Kevin Cox, David Dixon, Don Russell along with Juniors Don Russell Sherry Starks Randy Moore and Mike Pollard pushed the boys team to a seventh place in the sectionals and an elev- enth place over-all team standing. Cox and Dixon ran with out- standing performance at the Indi- anapolis lnvitational Track and Field Meet, with Cox placing sixth in the mile run and Dixon taking sixth in the IOO-yd. dash. When asked about this year, Girls Track Coach Martha Griffin said, Areas we will have to work on will be distance running, shot put, long jump and high iump. This year's Varsity additions included pitchers John Henry, Mark Steiner and John Featheringill who combined with veteran Tom Carder to give the Pats a strong pitching staff. lnfielders Kurt Guldner, Pat Mayfield, Mike Rodman and Rus- sell Dorsey teamed up with Kevin Goffinet and Mike Schaub to pro- vide a hustling infield. Outfielders Doug Whyde, Stan Stevens, Bob Baker and Mark Vandermuelen ioined Elliot Jacobs and Stan Bree- den to round out the team with a solid outfield unit. This year's Patriot team coupled with the coaching and managing abilities of Bob Tremain and Dane Paff respectively were able to defeat Beech Grove and Warren Central to become the Sectional Champs. The team then traveled to the Regionals only to be defeated by Carmel. However, they still I l 1 remained the City Runnerups with their 22 and 7 win-loss record. The Junior Varsity team, guided by first year coach Brad Goffinet was able to pull out an impressive ll win and 6 loss record. Behind the strong pitching of Scott Carder, Steve Thomas, Tom Clements and Chris Pritchett, the all underclass team was able to put it together for a successful season. The rest of the hard working team consisted of Scott Sterret, Steve Roman, Dan Schluge, Tim McCoy, Joe DeVore, Dennis Johnson, Jeff Gosnell and Mark McKinley. The team also had three freshmen standouts in Pritchett, Greg Agee, and Jim Huston. Coach Goffinet was pleased with his first year. When Bill Baugh, a Physical Edu- cation teacher at P.S. 94 was brought in to coach the Freshmen Baseball team, many people , U , a,.5,3 W JA' n- fs- , . 9 'ff A 'f . A . . el 1435 .1 Ai' 5 1 .,. I , f .N expected a more or less average season. But, much to everyone's surprise Coach Bough delivered on almost perfect 7 and l win-loss slate. The avid freshmen came out with a strong pitching staff this year as young hurlers Jim Huston, Greg Agee, and Chris Pritchett had a total of only 43 runs scored against them of 49 innings of pitching. Huston was the winningest pitcher with a 4-l record. But, the team's success was also because they came out swinging. By the end of the season, they had amassed a total of 99 runs in 8 games. Much of their batting suc- cess rested in the hands of Bill Rushton, Jeff Bowlby, Larry Willan, Steve Hicks, Danny Lessley and Mike Kidwell. . Q -1 . '-. es, .+.,. A . e., , .
