Then man appeared and given strength, he shaped the clay around him. He made dwellings; he made clothing; he made life and strife and love and as he grew. He became demanding, lazy and worthless. And he tore down that which had been created all that he made Now all that is left is Sand, and Sun, and Rain. —Camile Bennett 21 ENGLISH English Depart, sets precedent, offers sophs phased electives. Classes were offered to German students who had completed six semesters of the language. A vari¬ ety of subjects included German History, German Novelle, which dealt with realism in literature in the 1 9th century and Advanced Com¬ position, a development of gram- marical and technical writing. Future hopes include a team teach¬ ing program in which Mr. Robert ‘Doc’ Weaver and Mr. Brice Tres- sler would teach a German-Science class to study German Scientific accomplishments. French and Spanish classes emphasized the foreign language laboratory this year. The purpose of the lab was to develop speaking techniques in the various languages offered. As a result, the student was able to learn at his own pace. New teachers included Ms. Ruth Nelson, the new department chair¬ man and Ms. Mary Jane Freeland who taught Spanish. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Career Education Room resource¬ ful part of new Industrial Arts Department Wing ' Industrial Arts is doing a lot of interesting things that you can enjoy A new wing was added to the Industrial Arts Department this year. A resourceful part of the addition was the Career Education Conference Room. This was helpful to any student who might have had some problems with one of his pro¬ jects. There, he had a chance to look at slides or listen to tapes which would have explained the problem to the student. “The industrial arts courses are open to all girls,” added Mr. Clif¬ ton Scott. He felt that girls made good competition for the guys. There was a course open to freshmen called Introduction to Industry. They spent four weeks in each area of industrial arts so that they were able to become better acquainted with the courses. ' Until this year, girls did not have much to do with ROTC. It used to be that girls did not get credit for the class. They never had ROTC uniforms but they will have next September. The boys and girls take the same course except girls do not have to fire a rifle. ROTC benefits both boys and girls in military experience. The Evening School program has most of the same courses as day school. The University extension offered Graduate classes from IUPUI and Ball State. Pre-high school courses are for persons who have not yet finished high school. Personnal courses are actually sale¬ able skill courses. Both groups participated in the Veterans Day Parade, along with the Marching Band. Both groups rated second among all schools participating. —Suzanne Messersmith 4 9 Above: PATRIETTES—Bottom Row: B. Patriettes take over half time to uphold the spirit of the crowd with dances. Cheerleaders attended National Cheerleading Asso¬ ciation camp this summer in Ashland, Ohio. They learned about keeping school spirit high all year around as they attended cheering workshops and competed in competition. All three squads of cheerleaders received a first place ribbon and were awarded a Spirit Stick which was given to the squads who showed the most interest and spirit for their school. The Spirit Stick is the first in Marshall’s history. Patriettes practiced every night after school during Basketball season to coordinate a new dance for the next game. —Mindy Breedlove Left: JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS—Top to Bottom: Sopho¬ mores Carol Clawson and Kim Wommack, Junior Kim Kingsley, Sophomores Mindy Breedlove Linda Houck, Kelli Kingsley. Not on idol. Not a thing to bow down to. A person. Not something to trample on. Or grind into the ground. People are two people. One, the person of the people that don ' t know him (not a person) (the person to bow down to, the idol) Or the person of the people that know him, (A person) (the something not to trample or to grind) If everyone could just come to Be one; A person, 1 together, one. —Jay Wilkerson 95 Goals—improvement of spirit, curriculum John Marshall’s primary goals were improvement of school spirit and loyalty and improvement of the quality of teaching. Aside from these school-wide goals, each department had its own goals, and every teacher had classroom goals. Teachers wrote behavorial objec¬ tives and course outlines, attended textbook evaluation meetings, and analyzed the Planning-Programing Budgeting System (PPBS). Although JMHS began with more than 2,400 students, losses reduced the second semester total to about 2,200. There were 1 16 faculty members this year, 14 of whom were new. ‘‘Of these 116, 70 to 75 percent have a masters degree,” stated Thomas M. Haynes, principal. —Brenda Hughett Above: Principal Thomas M. With the closing of school for two days, the Marshall ‘gang’ took advantage of over a foot of snow. Many football fans found foot¬ ing slippery but still managed to play a few games in the wet snow. Some people went to work during the day for overtime since school was closed. Finally the snow cleared and it seemed as if Spring was here to stay but before long. Seniors were flocking to the track. And school was finished. Marshall was full of events, fads and fetishes. Hudnut spoke here while streakers struck as close to home as Ayr-way. This was a year of concerts from REO Speedwagon to Sly and Dylan. The Patio Parlor was swam¬ ped by Pinball Wizards while new apartments and shopping centers sprung up everywhere. This year ' s yearbook has been graciously brought to you by the many devoted employees, drafted by our beloved leader, Ms. E. Through many hours of insanity in our own funny farm, she brought us through on the paths of rightous- ness. Despite repeated floodings, snowball fights and plots against anybody, the staff of THE MARHIS- CAN pulled through. Special thanks are extended to Paula ' s Studio; Dick Kennard, Newsfoto Representative and Wil¬ liam Tobias Studios for their profes¬ sional assistance. Many thanks also to Jeff Buttrum and Rodney Pitt¬ man. Finally we would like to thank you, the student body, because we look at people as much as people look at us. —Jay and Ene Editor-in-Chief.Jay Wilkerson Assistant Editor.Ene Ruusma Chief Photographer .Steve Nokes Academics Editor.Phyllis Morgan Activities Editor.Suzanne Messersmith Sports Editor.Mindy Breedlove Faculty Album Editor.Brenda Hughett Senior Album Editor.Sheila Trowbridge Junior Album Editor .Kathy O’Rear Sophomore Album Editor .. .Terry Rowe Freshmen Album Editor.Kim Deer, Laurie Gaizat Business Manager.Mike Hamilton Index Editor.Colette Morgan Staff . . . .Janet Burleson, Brian Crawford, Jennie Elliot, Debra Fulton, Jill Harlow, Joe Heath, Sandra Jarchow, Tom Lott, Pete Mayfield, Linda McCaffrey, Sharon McCaffrey, Darrell Perry, David Ralston, Peggy Rogers, Thomas Shannon, Becky Swinford, Donna Theyssen, Gail Tremain, Lisa Wells, Mark Wright Advisor.Ms. Janet Eberle
