New staff members ddded this year also included Paula Barbour, Donald Buddenbaum, C h r i s t i n e Havens, Jerry Hurst, ond Marcia King. Other than the required anthology and the pursuit of the perfect para- graph, students read such works as the Crucible, Light in the Forest, and The Scarlet Letter. Classes, accompanied by their teachers, also had the opportunityito attend pertormdnces at Clowes Hall and Civic Theater. Mrs. Charlotte Balchunas conducts a freshman World History I in an unusual location--a home eco- nomics room. Overcrowding caused facilities to be used in unexpected ways this year. World History is concerned with the customs, problems, and peoples of nations in both hemispheres. Social Studies add a new intro course U.S. History students visited the Indianapolis Museum of Art where they viewed oil painting, sculpture, and furniture from ancient times to contemporary times. This year's Social Studies Depart- ment placed emphasis on ecology, law and society, war, youth subcul- ture, and other similar problems of society. The students also developed an understanding of differing contri- butions. Visitors to classes included the Assistant Mayor and an officer on the Narcotics squad. The department is headed by Mr. Richard Hedges. Two new teachers were added to the department, they were Mrs. Karen Mannweiler and Mr. Gerald Dailey. A new class, Introduc- tion to Social Studies, was also added. A W, 5 an ' '- 'L -:Q 5 A World History class is discussing the class system during the period of - feudalism. They hope to profit from the mistakes made by the people of Qian' that time. The class is led by Mrs. Karen Mannweiler. Viewing a film on the signing of the Declaration of Independence is one . of the U.S. History classes. The classes cover the period of time from the S landing of the Pilgrims to almost present day history.
