Class of 88 history Beginning at 1 pm. on June 5, 1988 and lasting until 2120 pm. the graduating class of John Marshall assembled at the Civic Audito- rium to receive their longeawaited diplomas. Emotions were high, not only among the 170 graduates but also among the hundreds of onloolsers. Opening the graduation was Class Public Relations Officer John Worden with the flag salute, followed by Class Secretary Christine Belnap leading the invocation. Class President and Vice President Kenny Leung and Tina Johnson welcomed guests and faculty from the Class of 88, Dr. Matthew Prophet, superintendent of Portland Public Schools, greeted guests and graduates. Prophet introduced to the gradu- ates the information age. He said, You must be able to change with society and be flexible. Jobs are going to be in the high technology fields and this is the time to prepare for that, He also said that we are living in a global society and in order to live here you must accept everyone. Senior Sheryl LaweHing was the start of the three student spealsers with the theme The Best Years of Your Life, Following her was senior Lorie Bowne with Memories 'Memories' was not only a funny speech but it was also truer My freshmen year was exactly how she put it, commented senior Meridith Mcheel. Senior Christine Belnap summed up the speeches with On Life's Journey. The graduates sat patiently while the tra- ditional schedule was followed. The long awaited announcement came from Vice Principal Judith Lachenmeier as she said it was time for the presentation of diplomas, After the graduates were seated with their forever longed diplomas clutched in their hands and smiles glowing from cheels to cheels, Class Treasurer Crystal Hoffman tools the stand to give the benediction. She then announced that it was time for the official changing ofthe tassels and hoots and hollers were heard from the now historical Class of 1988. .4 GRINS Graduates Vivian MacKenzie and Shelley Regimbal share their happi- FRIENDS FOREVER Graduates and pals Patti Boot, Karen LaFont, Teri Grace, ness at finishing school They had been friends for 18 years Donna Negus, Carolyn Lowery, Trina McMillen and Karen Sherman enyoy the DIPLOMA TIME Lorri Shepherd receives her diploma from Principal Gust Kanas warmth of their friendship and the sunny June afternoon The Forecourt Fountain provided an attractive baclsgraund for the event at the Civic Auditorium ceremony Graduation f 101
