PAUL BINNER SCHOOL The Paul Binner division of Marshall is a special school for the deaf and hard of hearing. Approximately one hundred seventy-five thousand totally deaf children are born every year in the United States. This number is usually doubled by non-inherited hearing losses. At one time, the word deaf struck terror, a fear based on that which is unknown. Today, the deaf child is af- forded many more opportunities than he was in previous, unenlightened years. John Marshall has one of the most extensive guidance courses for the deaf in the city. The department, which offers classes from seventh through twelfth grade, is headed by Miss Chrysoula Mathas. Other teachers are Miss Rebecca Becker, Mrs. Marjorie Murphy, and Miss Kay Olsen, about forty students are accommodated in these classes. The youngster with hearing diiliculties is exposed to the world of sound at the age of three. At that time, he is enrolled in the Neeskara-Binner department day school. There he undergoes strenuous currriculum, familiarizing himself with the fundamentals of speech. He also learns lip reading. A device used in helping teachers instruct children to speak is the group hearing aid. By sending powerful vi- brations through the ear bones, this aid enables the users to identify certain sounds. Along with rhythm training, this is a very important part of the Paul Binner depart- ment. In the public schools, no communication by sign language is taught or permitted. Excluding a hearing impairment, the deaf are in no way different from other people. They experience the same physical, psychological, and social changes that others do. John Marshall is an expansion of the course which the student begins at Neeskara. After six grades of basic edu- cation, the student graduates to high school. Here he is provided with the opportunity of a higher education. VVith specially trained teachers, he takes the regular aca- demic courses that are available to all students who at- tend high school. Standing: Tom Schmidt, Henry Honeck, Ray Bannen- burg Sitting: Miss Becker, Sandra Davidson, Donna Taft, Lory Gramling, Donna Howard, William Hallenberg, Don Ketter, Willi-am Teague, Linda Schuyler, james Schwartz
