SPECIAL EDUCATION In the special education division students are taught useful skills. Here Mr. Haywood instructs a pupil in the use of a telephone. The school experiences for students in the spe- cial education classes are made as enjoyable as possible. Mr. Haywood and Mrs. Buchholtz are shown here twisting with their students. Each year, about one hundred and twenty thousand American couples become the parents of children whose intellectual development is limited due to brain injury during birth or early years, a chemical disorder, a heredi- tary imperfection, or one of many other reasons yet un- known. Whatever the cause, the learning ability of these children is impaired and most of them never go beyond the level of normal seven-to-twelve year olds. No other handicap claims so many victims. Until recently, the parents of these children could find nowhere to go for constructive advice, help or informa- tion. Today, a more enlightened society deals with the problem of mental retardation. John Marshall is the only public high school in the state of Wisconsin, and one of the few in the country that has facilities for teaching trainable children. The two people who conduct these classes are Mrs. Kay Buch- holtz and Mr. Earl Haywood. Fifty-four students participate in this program. They attend school for two and one half hours daily, due to a limited attention span and the great number of pupils to be accommodated. All learning is accomplished through concrete experiences in class. The students are eager to come to school, for this is where they have their social contacts as well as their varied educational activities.
