DIRECTOR'S GRIEF Pu-u-u-leze! We are counting on you, Cindy. just do me a favor. Do your audience a favor. Now imagine. The stage is set. You are appearing. A hush falls over the audi- ence as they await your opening. You walk out silently and then confound them with your cry. You will make this play. Everything hinges on how well you play your part. No, no, Cindy! Put a little oomph into it. Look happy. You're not walking in your sleep, you know. At this rate we're never going to get this play out. The Man Who Never Got to Dinner-that is what we'll have to call this play. Mr. Ralph Bielenberg quietly sits down and awaits Cindy's entrance. Cindy walks slowly onto the stage. Everything is silent. She looks hesitant. Now, what was it he said? Oh yes, rhapsodize-what's that? The audi- torium is suddenly filled with her cry as she jumps up, lifting her arms high above her head. Now let's singl she screams. Chin up. Rhapsodizel Improvise! Look jubilant! I want a little gusto in your voice. Throw yourself into it. Raise your arms to the sky. Let your audience be capti- vated in the scene. Here, let me show you. Put a little elegance into your hands. Pretend you are creating a masterpiece, and that it is awaiting your final touch be- fore the world will cherish it to their hearts.
