WHAT HOLDS MARSHALL TOGETHER? Imagine it you can, Our school up on the hill, Without the Merit System Or the stands packed to the For lust a moment please Try to tix in your mind, Marshall without elections, Or the long cafeteria line. Wouldn't it be strange, If our teams iust up and quit? Or we walked into the aud And found a place to sit? It we walked along the hall And not a soul said Hi? It we didn't have sweaters to Tell the Seniors by? Can you imagine the day None of the Lettermen say, Please take your seat, The assembly's under way. BRUCE KIRKPATRICK Principal To one who has carried his arm in a sling for a portion of this semester, the temp- tation is strong to wax facetious upon the topic of What Holds Marshall To- gether? However, the subiect is a serious one for the cohesive elements of a school are too important to be treated lightly. The factors which to me seem to give this school unity are a spirit of mutual under- standing and respect between faculty and students, pride in John Marshall, and the ability of our pupils to distinguish between the times for work and the times for play. These attributes are reflected in the atti- tudes of the great maiority of Marshallites but the greater the proportion of students who contribute to these unifying influ- ences, the greater will be the power which welds our diverse personalities, interests and activities into a loyal, considerate and purposeful school community. I urge the minority to ioin the maiority. W. BRUCE KIRKPATRICK 0ur adrninistrators and faculty band .,, X E 5 5 E : S 5 - xx. J , MR RICHARD COOPER MISS DOROTHY RAKESTRAW MR. CARLETON ROBERTS MRS. James, L. Kap lan, R. Nochum, R. Allen, Miss Kadner, K. Horn A. Frank, R. Goldoni, N. Duncan, D. Treiman, Dubin, I appreciate very much this opportunity I am hav- ing to express my thoughts to the Barrister. This year of mine in the United States has been of great importance to me. The experiences I have had in this school, I am sure, will never be for- gotten by me. I want to take the opportunity to thank the Optimists' Downtown Club, which, with it's financial help, made possible to me to become an exchange student. The classes and the daily school life gave me a chance to know the Ameri- can system, which, although completely different from the Italian one, I found out to be modern and advanced. I hope that in the future you will be able and willing to bring over other exchange students, in order to give other exchange students a real chance to know America and American schools. I had a chance also to practice my favor- ite sports playing under the schooI's flag and I want to thank Mr. Wheeler for the very useful teaching I received. I want to thank all of my teachers, Mr. Kirkpatrick and Mrs. Anderson for the great help they gave me and all of you for your friendship. BOB GOLDONI We are linkeal together Now that my stay here at John Marshall High School comes to its end, I really realize how wonderful this year has been and of how much importance and value it will be for my whole life. I grew up in Kiel, a German town which differs in many ways from a city like Los Angeles. For example, here it sometimes seems to me that everybody lives on wheels, and almost never gets out of a car, whil in Germany the main means of trans- portation is the bicycle. When I came over last August, everything was new to me: the language, the people, the schools, just everybody and everything. By now so much has changed. I have many wonderful friends, and feel at home at Marshall as if I always had been a member. I learned so much about the way an Ameri- can school runs. Having been a member of Leadership Class for both semesters added a great deal to my knowledge of student government. But besides this I had the most wonderful time at many, many parties, dances and other social activities and sports events. I thank all of you so much for giving me this year and being so nice to me. It is a wonderful feeling, having been a member of the student body of John Marshall High. I hope to meet many of you again sometime later on the other side of the ocean in my country. You hold Marshall together with your increasing school spirit, with your constant support, and your great pride in our school. You are the mortar be- tween the bricks of student government, the scotch tape that holds up the crepe paper at our activities. A part of you is in the pins which symbolize each organization, for the student is the foundation of every organi- zation, whether it be big or small. The tape around an athlete's ankle and the binding that holds our books together, all of these things are the student. lt ls You, the student, who holds John Marshall High School togther.
