Criminal justice is a difficult field: Charged with the legal responsibility to protect and to police the public, criminal justice professionals must at the same time be sensitive to the more abstract laws of ethics and humanity. As the dramatic changes in American sociological patterns spill over into the criminal justice world, professionals in the field must be skilled not only in interpreting the letter of the law, but in tolerating differ- ence, ambiguity, and change. As John Jay graduates, you are uniquely prepared to meet this modern challenge. You are schooled not only in your own specialties, but in the best liberal arts tradition. I hope your broad education and professional training, enhanced by the distinct background each of you brings to that education will help you to make a good living but, more importantly, to live well.
