Presidential Pvlessage As you graduate from John Jay you face the exciting opportunity of being able to exert real influence on the way our society functions. Criminal justice is a difficult field: Charged with the legal responsibility to protect and to police the public, criminal justice professionals must at the same time be sensitive to the more abstract laws of ethics and humanity. As the dramatic changes in American sociological patterns spill over into the criminal justice world, professionals in the field must be skilled not only in interpreting the letter of the law, but in tolerating differ- ence, ambiguity, and change. As John Jay graduates, you are uniquely prepared to meet this modern challenge. You are schooled not only in your own specialties, but in the best liberal arts tradition. I hope your broad education and professional training, enhanced by the distinct background each of you brings to that education will help you to make a good living but, more importantly, to live well. Congratulations on your graduation, and best wishes for every happiness and success in your lives and in your careers. 7 .ti SWE .hc fu- 1 fr '.ff-1333 -5 .., . .. ..z,,4 f 2-Y': 5IF'f4F1f ' ,,g45i?:f3f'f .Zvi V 'N F CE PL CES .-11774, .N QM 5 x., 4 . I am pleased with the spirit of cooperation and professional- ism exhibited by the Judicial Board, the Student Council and its committees, and all club representatives. Despite a serious funding error, student leaders were able to resolve the issue when they were back on campus. One of the highlights of the weekend was your active participation in the Ethnic Awareness Workshops. Your thoughts, words, and actions enabled us to address this sensitive issue. Each of you clearly demonstrated leadership capa- bilities during the course of the weekend. ' 111,65 I LOVING MEMORY Margie Garcia, 1962-85 To her fellow students, faculty, and friends, Margie Garcia was a source of inspira- tion. In spite of her terminal illness, she did not allow herself to succumb to self-pity. Instead, she devoted her entire existence to realizing her educational goals. Her quest for success gave profound meaning to her life, as well as to those she encountered. We are indebted to Margie, for through her memory we will always be reminded that success is attainable, provided we are willing to summon the determination to work hard and perservere. Z .X ri Y BRIEF HISTORY OF PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is a non-profit international organization of collegiate and professional men. It was founded in 1914 at Howard University, Washington, D.C. by three men of great vision and foresight. A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse and Charles I. Brown laid the foundation for the organization. Since its inception, Phi Beta Sigma has grown to a membership of over 85,000 and has established over 500 campus and alumni chapters in the United States and abroad. For years Phi Beta Sigma has been known as The People's Fraternity . This name is undoubtedly a fitting one. Being both a social and service organization, Phi Beta Sigma has three major programs: Education, Bigger and Better Business an Social Action. In order to implement these and other programs, the fraternity works with other organiza- tions such as the Pan Hellenic Council llocal and nationall. NAACP, National Urban League, United Negro Fund, National Coalition of Black Voter Participation, National Foundation March of Dimes. Phi Beta Sigma has established a record of impressive impact in several communities. Our concept of helping others is to provide brotherhood and community service, pursue scholastic excellence, encourage bigger and better business in and for the black community, foster social action and to improve the educational stature of members and others. These principles are expressed in our motto: Culture for Service and Service for Humanity . Phi Beta Sigma members dedicated to their respective communities have reaffirmed a course of action that provides services to those in need. Ri. fy HISTORY OF OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY INC. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., was organized and founded on the campus of Howard University, on November 17, 1911. The organizers were three undergduate students in the College of Liberal Arts, Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper and Frank Coleman, and their faculty advisor Professor Ernest E. Just. Manhood, Scholarship, Perserverance and Uplift were adopt- ed as the Cardinal Principles of the Fraternity. The motto of the fraternity was chosen to be Friendship is the Essential to the Soul. The fraternity has grown since its founding to a membership of way over 80,000 with chapters spread across the United States along with three International Chapters. The fraternity is service based as well as socially based. It sponsors nationally on a annual basis several programs such as National Achievement Week, National Talent Hunt, National Essay Contest, Outstanding Citizen Award, National Scholarship Pro- - xxx' I E UI . Alexis THE TRUE MEANING People learn how to value a love when they no longer have that love. Yes, there are so many people in this world who don't know the real meaning of love. Love, to a lot of people is a game. It's a game without a name. When that game is played on them, the sportsmanship's gone, and the vengance comes in. Love can be family love. Love can be a friend. It can also be a spouse. People take the love that's given to them, sometimes, as a curse. They take it as if someone is out to hurt them. It might be true in some cases, but usually, that person who shows hisfher love, which is felt from the heart, is the one who pays the consequences. A person has to learn, to understand, which is real love, and which is the Game of Love. Sometimes, they realize that a little too late. That's when they learn the meaning of REGRET, but that love has already been taken by someone who knew how to love in return. It can be family love. It can be friendship love. It can be the love between a man and a woman. If a person has someone offering himfher love, hefshe should not let that person go without showing himfher that same love in return. A person may loose hisfher love, and what's life without love? It indeed hurt me to loose my father. I still cry at nights for him. I'm still refusing to accept his death. There are so many people I now love with all my heart. I thought I would never feel the hurt I felt over my father's loss, for anyone else. I was wrong. I thought I could never love anyone as much as I love my father. Now, I see the love I feel for one man is the same as Daddy's love, but it will never be greater. I'm feeling as much pain for the loss of the man I love, as I felt for Daddy's loss. I was lost without my father. My children brought me courage. Now, I'm lost again. this time without my children, and without my love.
