BRUTHER RUBERT WAGNER 1927-1982 The John Jay communrty was shocked by the sudden and untrmely death of Brother Robert Wagner rn the Summer of 1982 Our sorrow remarns unabated as trme proves to be so slow a healer Although hrs classes wrll be taught by others rt rs doubtful rf anyone wrll match the warmth and compassron whrch were so unrquely the hallmarks of Brother Robert He gave of hrmself rn so many ways that we the 1983 Yearbook staff dedrcate thrs book to hrs memory Enterrng the Chrrstran Brothers Order rn hrs late teens he spurned a lrfe of comfort and comparatrve famrly wealth choosmg rnstead to devote hrmself to helpmg those less fortunate Although hrs benefrcence was extended to all he was partrcularly concerned wrth the young to whom he dedrcated hrs professronal and personal lrfe Durrng the years of 1954 through 1970 he served as Drrector of Socral Servrces at Lrncoln Hall a resrdentral treatment center for troubled male adolescents Thrs was but one of the many teachrng and socral servrce posrtrons through whrch he sought to rmprove the qualrty of lrfe for youngsters experrencrng severe drffrcultres Hrs extraordrnary talents were recognrzed by the Governor of Rhode Island who appornted Brother Robert as the Drrector of therr State Trarnrng School System rn the 1970 s A Governor s Crtatron whrch hung on the wall rn hrs offrce attested to the srgnrfrcance of hrs contrrbutrons rn rarsrng the qualrty of chrld care rn the Rhode Island State Trarnrng Schools Never content to rest on past laurels Brother Robert subsequently served as a founder and member of the Board of Drrectors of Ocean Trdes an rnnovatrve network of resrdentral and communrty based servrces for troubled youths rn Rhode Island Impressrve as hrs professronal credentrals were however rt was rn hrs personal lrfe that the full extent of hrs goodness and compassron were fully revealed Throughout the years he gave shelter to a number of adolescents who had nowhere else to turn and at trmes hrs resrdence resembled a group home for boys A mother and father to the boys It was partrcularly frttrng that hrs pallbearers many of whom returned from varrous parts of the country were Brother Roberts boys Appornted to the faculty rn 1976 as a member of the Department of Law Polrce Scrence and Crrmrnal .Iustrce Admrnrstratron he was respected as a specralrst rn the freld of Correctronal Admrnrstratron The rrch combrnatron of academrc rnsrghts and the practrcal wrsdom garned as a practrtroner contrrbuted to the popularrty of hrs classes whrch were always among the frrst departmental classes at regrstratron The affinrty between students and teacher permeated hrs class and contrrbuted to a Joyful learnrng experrence Hrs teachrng was not confrned to the classroom however and students and faculty alrke knew hrm to be among the most accessrble of professors It was not unusual for hrm to work late rn the evenrng or on weekends rf a student needed extra help and he was constantly wrrtrng recommendatrons arrangrng for job rntervrews or grvrng counsel to students Nor was he any less responsrble to others rn the John Jay communrty He rarely declrned an assrgnment and served on the most sensrtrve and trme consumrng commrttees Impassroned wrth the Joy of teachrng he taught summer sessrons specral programs and was always a wrllrng partrcrpant rn campus actrvrtres Desprte the numerous demands upon hrs trme and energres however he was always avarlable when a wrse head and a warm heart were needed There are numerous crrterra by whrch to measure a teacher Classroom observatrons student evaluatrons and scholarly publrcatrons are but a few Brother Robert was hrghly rated rn all of these areas but what he wrll always be remembered for was the lovrng rnteractron between students and teacher The excellence of hrs teachrng was only surpassed by the goodness of hrs person , . 7 , . 7 7 , . - l a Q 1 1 1 , 7 , - 7 7 number of the chrldren he rarsed as hrs own, sacrrfrcrng hrmself so that he mrght serve as both surrogate ' I 7 G6 77 , , . 7 7 7 ' ' 7 7 7 ' 9
