Winifred Nesbit Cataigne In Loving Memory PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATES-1982 The main problem with saying something meaningful to our graduates is that there is no stereotype to address. You are young, middle-aged and older. You are job-seeking, career-building and already-achieved. You are many colors from many places and you are handicapped and you are gifted. So let me dwell upon my perception of how necessary all of you are to this society. You are, largely speaking, ei- ther in or going into public service: many of you into the myriad fields of criminal justice. lt is timely for you since it is in these fields where the greatest needs ofour society are found. As our economy goes through the throes of re- cession, unemployment and reordered priorities the already over-burdened criminal justice system becomes ever more jammed. The same economic devastation which contributes to the over-loading makes the hiring of additional criminal justice practitioners more and more difficult. lnto this difficult situation the degree-bearing graduate brings a competitive edge. He or she comes to the task with a clearer vocational focus, with a broader notion ofthe world. with a more sensitive understanding of the mysteries of human behavior and with the promise of being more productive than others. It is with a strong beliefin your value that I wish you well in all that you may do. You are an important part of this growing John .lay community and I urge that you keep that in your thoughts. There are many of you in every part of the country and we nccd you all. -Gerald Lynch 3 'V , , M.. . 4- ., I M X , . 'A'-'QQ Q I .
