You have succeeded in achieving a goal you set for yourself which can now become the basis for setting other goals which will bring you, your families and your society the benefits of your education. But there is a balance to be struck between plan- ning for the future and adapting to real opportunities as they come along. Sometimes, it is in daring to face new challenges which we doubt we can handle' that we find our finestchances to grow and develop, You have all chosen a field where there are more chal- lenges than solutions, more problems than answers and more op- portunities than sacred precedences. john jay seeks to continue to support you, encourage you and inform you as the years go by and we hope that you will do the same for your nourishing mother-your alma mater. -President Gerald W. He is so much a part of this college. To go in ten years from matriculation as a student to the highest reaches of the administration can hardly be matched. His student years were alive with initiative and energy. He was a charter member of the Student Councilg he was the first editor of Lexg a prime mover in the creation of justitia, the college year book. On graduation he was the choice for the college's highest honors, the Leonard E. Riesman Memorial Award, and the justice Department Fel- lowship for graduate study at the University of California at Berkeley. With his graduate work done, Dr. Ward returned to john jay as a faculty member. He taught and wrote and publishedg he acted as Coordinator of Student Activitiesg he formed and coached the varsity baseball team. Presi- dent Donald Riddle appointed him Dean of Students and Director of the Department of Counseling and Student Life. Dean Ward was crucial in adapting the college to the new open admissions policy. Promotions brought Dr. Ward to a full professorship in the College's Department of Law, Police Science, and Criminal justice. He founded the Criminal justice Center at john jayg he created the Law Enforcement Newsg he established the john jay Press. He assumed the vice-presidency of the college. In that office he was pivotal in the triumphant struggle of the College when its autonomy within City University was threatened by the 1975-76 fiscal crisis. He was appointed Director of Graduate Studies in 1977. He left john jay College to accept the appointment as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Illinois, Chicago. Farewells come only because they must. Regretting the departure and hailing the person of Richard Ward, third vice-president of john jay College 1 if 1 VO ' D U Q , px. ' sf'-'24 , J . ,W f , 'x X.
