John Jay College of Criminal Justice John Jay is a unique type of institution. lt is the only four year college in the United States committed to the field of Criminal Justice in its entirety. By action of the Board of Higher Education in December, 1954 a program of cooperation with the New York City Police Department was undertaken for the more effective education of the police force. The initial step in the joint educational program was the establishment of a curriculum in Police Science leading to the Associate in Applied Science degree which had been registered by the State Education Department. Course work in the A.A.S. program began in September, 1955. A Specialization in'Police Science in the curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Business Administration degree was approved in 1957 and the irst matriculated students were admitted to the program in September 1957. In June of 1964, the Board of Higher Education established the College of Police Science as a senior college in the City University of New York. The College opened in September 1965 and absorbed the undergraduate program in Police Science which had been oflered at the Baruch School. In 1966, the name was changed to John Jay College of Criminal Justice to more accurately reflect its concern with the whole field of criminal justice. lt was at this time that civilian students were admitted in order to widen the scope of the College. The education program of the College has as its objectives the broad education of law enforcement ollicers, professional training for police and other services in the process of criminal justice, development of necessary goals of leadership, and the fostering of professional achievement in public service. Extra-curricular activities and participation on college committees alongside members of the faculty and administration give students a chance to be instrumental in the molding of the present and future of the school. John Jay has become a forum in which police and civilian students exchange ideas and work together for the betterment of themselves, their school, and their community.
