Text from Pages 1 - 156 of the 1974 volume:

In retrospect, the Senior Class of 74 dreamed and visualized these days as Seniors. Wake up. these days have arrived! We are putting memories aside, and taking a giant step to the other side of the golden gate. Maturity awaits us. With all we've got we present the 1974 yearbook with all aspects of reaching out from where we are today. The Senior Class of 1974 has several characteristics which are revealed in this yearbook. All are in the best interest of our yearbook. PROGRESS... This class has put forth a tremendous amount of effort in making this yearbook what it should be. Setting a goal and getting there. That's PROGRESS! TOGETHERNESS... A word commonly used among those brothers and sisters who care what happens. We care! PRIDE... A very important something to this class. Without it. we wouldn't have gotten this far. MOTIVATION... Inspiration from those who care about our class. BACKGROUND... Without them there would be no us! Congratulations to all those parents of the Class of 1974. JOHN HAY HORNET 1974 JOHN HICKS This is a tribute to a great 1969 John Hay graduate, John Hicks. We are grateful to all those who have given their efforts that we might have this condensed record of the events of the school year. We wish to thank our very loyal and helpful advisors. Mr. Randolph P. Hicks and Mrs. Deborah Margies who have given tirelessly of their time and efforts to make this annual a success. We also offer our gratitude to our photographers who helped us immensely and were very generous in the giving of both time and knowledge to further the success of the yearbook. To the faculty and student body, we say thank you for the oport and cooperation you have so willingly qiven to us. May the yearbook serve as a challenge and inspiration to those who will have tne same responsibility in future years. To the Seniors, we have just this to say: As you pass slowly out of the doors of John Hay, remember the very doors of years past, quietly shutting behind you. Go forth eagerly to open new doors to the future and whatever it may bring— For when one door is shut—another opens. We hope that this issue of the yearbook will become one of your most prized possessions, and that you may look back over this and your faded snapshots and remomber those good old days at John Hay High School. BASKETBALL TEAM 131 EDUCATION ROAD Anthony Neal This is the place they say we belong, To increase the brain and make it strong, To receive the knowledge and be on our way, They say we will be the rulers one day. I look at school as a fun place to be, But going to class just wasn’t for me, Until I realized it would be helpful later in life, I wanted to settle down and find a wife. Looking for jobs was really a caper, There just weren’t any without that paper. This is something that I hate to say, It was a pleasure at John Hay. I used to stagger in class bout 10 minutes late, Teachers weren’t teachers, instead a mate. Until the card came and you would see, You got the grade, the one after D. Yeah, that’s the one to look out for, Cause it could be the key to your door. So go to school my sisters and brothers, man I went thirteen years and still don’t understand. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER I feci that this is telling you that knowledge is the key to the world. A person can never learn too much. You will always learn something new every day. This applies to young and old people alike. There are many things to conquer in the world and the only way is to have the knowledge which you choose. Once you start gaining knowledge you should never stop. When you say the word, knowledge, you're talking about things that happen everywhere. Not just locally, but nation and world-wide. If a person could learn the main details on every subject that person would have unlocked the world for himself. There is a very old saying which I believe, You're never to old to learn. But I myself would like to leam as much as I can while I'm young. Then 1 could apply this to its fullest use. The reason I say this is I want to achieve all I can, to try my knowledge and high standards, to enjoy them better through my middle ages instead of my older years. I would like to also say that I would want my name to go down in history as one of the smartest black men that ever lived. The reason I say this is that there are other black brothers and sisters trying for the same thing I want. I hope there will be more to come. As for myself and for the others to achieve this, we must all get the knowledge. When you achieve knowledge then you would have conquered the world. The world is waiting for you to conquer it. Each day that you live you should learn as much as you can until that day has come when you've conquered the world. When that day comes you will know for yourself that you've achieved the knowledge of the world. To start with, learn all you can in high school if you haven't started already. Carry your education as far in the schools as you can. I would like all young people to know that I plan to be an electronic engineer. For me to become this I have to meet requirements of a five-year college. I know that they're not going to give me anything. I know I have to get it for myself. The only way I know is to learn all I can so I can put my foot in the door to the world and say, Let me in. I ve achieved the know- ledge to unlock the door. I am setting my standards high. They are so high that there Is no limit to the knowledge I want to learn. I have become a senior and I know the next step for me is to meet the world. The world is challenging me and I accept and I plan to become the champion. I am making a promise to always try to improve myself, never stay at one level. I am a young person trying to make my future the best it can be. I am having a dream now and I put it all on paper. For this dream I will do my best. I will turn it all into reality. As you know all things start as dreams. It is up to each person to make it a fact. With every breath I take I will try my best to make it a fact by achieving all the knowledge that I can.
