Foreward With the progress of John Hay High, we, the staff of the 1973 yearbook enters a new era in the traditions of the school. As every aspect of our school life takes on new dimensions, so does this yearbook. With this idea in mind, we endeavor to bring to you a collection of events and experiences which will be important memories in the years to come. We hope that this enlarged edition will create new traditions and enhance previous ones. A Letter From the Yearbook Advisor Congratulations: You have come a long way together since coming to High School as 10th graders. While reflecting upon your past experiences you are able to profit from your mistakes. The sales of yearbooks have been challenging as well as rewarding. There were, however, many unplesant experiences, but you came tlurough in a magnificent style. We hope that this annual will be just what you are looking for. We think that you will enjoy it. Now, let's get on with a more serious subject. Let's think about the future--your future. You have three alternative courses to make in life and I think that John Oxenham aptly explains these choices in his lyrical passage: To everyone there openeth A way, and ways, and a way And the high soul climbs the high way And tlie low soul gropes the low And in between, on the misty flats, The rest drift to and fro But to everyone there openeth A high way and a low way, And everyone decideth The way his soul shall go In these unforgetable lines, the poet presents tliree alternative guides for living, one of which must be chosen by you. You can, if you wish climb the high way that leads to the future complete with love, happiness and success. Or you may drift to and fro on the misty flats of mediocrity, never accomplishing any objectives. Or you may grope about aimlessly in the low paths of defeat, failure and disappointment. Each day during your high school career you have, in some way helped to crystalize your selection upon how your life shall be spent. As Coleridge puts it In today there already walks tomorrow . We hope that John Hay High School has opened many avenues for self-improvement. If you have taken advantage of these opportunities, then someday you can thrill to the sublime realization that you have discovered the high way that leads to a beautiful bright and prosperous future. Frederick D. Meredith 11 Dedication The 1973 yearbook staff is very happy to dedicate this year's yearbook to Mr. Frederick D. Meredith. Prior to this year, Mr. Meredith served faithfully for three years as the advisor of the yearbook staff. Because of his untiring efforts in making our publication successful, we respectfully dedicate the 1973 edition of the yearbook to him. 118 ADVERTISING Congratulations Seniors.
