In keeping with the movement to do more for the above-average student, the English department this year instituted two Major Works classes-sophomore literature and junior literature. This involves wider reading and more critical study. Future years will see more of this type classes throughout the department. Requirements for entrance into these classes are a desire on the part of the student. the mental ability to carry the work, and the availability of time on the part of the student for the expanded program. Another course offered beyond the required course of study is Creative Writing. Students who have a flair for writing or have imagination usually are eager to get into this class, though anyone who wants the course enough to work as hard as the course demands can learn the art of good writing. It may substitute for Senior grammar and composition. Still another course instituted to meet other student needs is Business English, This course emphasizes busi- ness letter writing. correct spelling, correct business English. and correct writing. lt also may substitute for Senior grammar and composition. Participates in many essay writing contests. thereby contributing to community welfare. Enters students in interscholastic eontests in spel- ling and ready writing. Offered classes in remedial lfnglish.
