Reagan is in the throes of such a crisis in the retirement of Mr. Williams from the school system of Houston. He came to Reagan in 1929 as assistant principal and became principal in 1932. Within those years stands a record of staggering achievement. Space does not permit the listing of his many accomplishments, nor is it necessary that they be listed, for they stand as monuments to his ability and to his dedi- cation to the cause of education, but the influence of those efforts is the thing that is important and marks him for greatness. We shall miss him, but at the same time we rejoice that it was our happy lot to have had him come our way. He leaves us a great school to be proud of, a strong foundation to continue to build on, and high goals to aspire to. In appreciation of the legacy he has left us-the sense of the importance of education and the worth of character-and with the pledge that we shall try to make our lives better for having known him, we proudly dedicate to him this, the 1958 PENNANT. 71' ifx' ,, nf, v FOREWO RD The theme of this year's PENNANT is TIME, which we have striven to depict on the book's division pages. In choosing this theme, we had in mind first and foremost appreciation for the Time Mr. Williams has been con- nected with Reagan, chiefly as Principal, from 1932-1958. It also represents the Time of this particular year, 1957-1958, for all of us here at Reagan, with the hope that in these nine months we have grown in knowledge, char- acter, and friendships. In yet another sense it is the Time of Life in general, which is given us to spend maturing as individuals, with always the goal ahead of leaving the niche of the world we occupy a better place than we found it. Take time to live- that is what time is for. Take time to work- it is the price of success. Take time to play- it is the fountain of wisdom. Take time to be friendly- it is the road to happiness. Take time to laugh- it.is the music of the soul. Take time to be courteous- it is the mark of a gentleman. TABLE OF CGNTENTS FACULTY CLASSES CLUBS ,un FAVORITES SPORTS STUDENT LIFE wt We Q Reagan, 1926 Reagan, 1958 1926 saw the erection of the John H. Reagan Senior High School. The picture above shows that its east wall included the main entrance. A steel strip across the floors of the three corridors indicates this on the inside of the building. This cuts off all rooms east of rooms 108, 214, and 314. 1929 saw the remainder of the classrooms, the auditorium, the industrial arts building, and the boys' gym built. Heretofore the girls' gym had been used for both boys' and girls' physical education classes. To round out the building as it now stands, the Home Economics wing was added. From Heights High to John H. Reagan Senior High When Reagan opened in 1926, a ceremony took place in the form of a march from the Heights High building fnow the Hamilton Junior High Schooll to the new building, preceded by a band. WILLIAMS To the Classes of 1958: The young people of America today are both the promise and the hope of the United States of tomorrow with its democratic ideals, principles, and institutions. The essential dif- ference between the United States and some other countries is not that Americans have a higher standard of living, but that they have been graced with a larger budget of individual liberties which are protected by a written constitution. Among these freedoms is the right to speak and write according to one's conscience and, by inference, to read and think in freedom. Now, as never before, we realize and appreciate the sacredness of those fundamental and inalienable rights as set forth in the Constitution, that all-important document handed down to us by our forefathers. Today a startled but determined nation must rededicate itself to the fundamental prin- ciples set forth in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States. Americans must pledge themselves, and their lives if need be, to defend their liberties against inter- national pirates and outlaws that are now threatening their existence. It is your responsi- bility to preserve the precious and sacred principles, ideals, and guarantees of freedom and liberty unfettered and unimpaired and transmit them to future generations. In keeping with the movement to do more for the above-average student, the English department this year instituted two Major Works classes-sophomore literature and junior literature. This involves wider reading and more critical study. Future years will see more of this type classes throughout the department. Requirements for entrance into these classes are a desire on the part of the student. the mental ability to carry the work, and the availability of time on the part of the student for the expanded program. Another course offered beyond the required course of study is Creative Writing. Students who have a flair for writing or have imagination usually are eager to get into this class, though anyone who wants the course enough to work as hard as the course demands can learn the art of good writing. It may substitute for Senior grammar and composition. Still another course instituted to meet other student needs is Business English, This course emphasizes busi- ness letter writing. correct spelling, correct business English. and correct writing. lt also may substitute for Senior grammar and composition. I3 LIBR RY Mrs. Catherine May Mrs. Dorothy Hamilton DEPARTMENT HEAD Mrs. Catherine May Many changes both in housing and services have taken place in the library since Reagan High School was built. These changes have brought greater opportunities for better reading and research. One of the greatest improvements has been the addi- tion of the periodical room. This made it possible not only to house the magazines properly but also to increase the number of magazines subscribed to by the library. A second advancement made was instituting the audio- visual program. The audio-visual Workroom houses the equipment and offers opportunity for previewing films or any other of the connnunication techniques. This room is also used for processing books and storing supplies. ln 1953 the entire reading room was renovated. Withitt recent years an instrumental program has been set up in the use of the library. so that students during their high school days might be able unaided to find what they want and in later life to use any library on their own. Through the interested efforts of Mr. Williams, Reagan was outfitted with a Little Theater last year. The move has proved to be of inestimable benefit and enjoyment, for the department has not only a place set apart for holding classes and rehearsing, but also for presenting plays to audiences. When organized in 1929, the band was a military unit composed of boys. Under the direction of Leslie Kohlman. Mrs. O. W. Bogard, Charles Lindsey, Jay M. Brand- stetter. and John Robbins, the band has grown and improved. There are many factors which contribute to the high distinction of the band. Among these are the accomplishments in the past with support from the student body and Boosters Club. Some activities in which the band participates include Ricels first home football game, marching contests. music festivals, the May Fete, graduation exercise, and taking part in all Reagan football games. Last year the band was invited by the City of Houston to play for the annual Tree of Lights ceremony at City Hall. Each year many band students enter the solo and ensemble contests held annually by the Texas Interscholastic League. Also, every year we are privileged to have many of our students win positions in All-State Band and the Youth Symphony. A high standard of performance is maintained at all times. The Creed is a five-point system: a belief in the future of one's self, a belief in rendering the highest measure of service to customers, a belief in the democratic philosophies of pri- vate enterprise and competition, a belief in the ethics of conduct laid down by the Great Distributor. and a belief in doing the best in every way according to these principles. Many advancements have been made since 19-lf-1, such as the giving of many scholarships. Two important scholarships are given D.E. students by the Retail Merchants Association of Houston and the Retail Furniture Associa- tion of Texas. The activities of the club this year have included morning club meetings, a picnic, an employer-employee banquet, and a convention in Austin. Other activities included a selling contest and a contest for our D.E. sweetheart. LG techniques in selling. 1 we ,W Z fu- . .Mg-.Kg ,. , in-M ,,,.,.. Being a team captain is an honor for any girl taking physical education, since only four captains are chosen from each class. This choice is based on leadership, ability in skills, dependability, popu- larity, and sportsmanship. Among the duties of these leaders are assisting the teachers, selecting teams, helping these teams with skills, and being responsible for setting a good example for their fellow team members.
