To the Class of 1957: I congratulate you upon having finished your high school course and rejoice with you. The greatest joy that comes with graduation is the satisfaction of accomplishment, of attaining a goal. In your enjoyment of the moment, many of you have not yet had time to reflect upon the deeper significance of gradua- tion-a transition for you from the enchantments of carefree youth to the solid responsibilities of adult life. While it is thus an important milestone in your life, it need not be one of terrifying possibilities. Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind. It is not a matter of rock and roll and supple knees, it is a quality of imagination, a vigor of emotions, a freshness of the deep springs of life. In a horse race the fastest animal gets the inside track, thus gaining advan- tage over those crowded away from the rail. Similarly, in the competitive race of men with men in business, in industry, and in the professions, the high school and college graduates have an inevitable advantage over the untrained non- graduates, in that they do things more rapidly and more efficiently.
