The greatest joy that comes with graduation is the satisfaction of accomplishment, of attaining a goal. In your enjoyment of the moment, many of you have not yet had time to reflect upon the deeper significance of gradua- tion-a transition for you from the enchantments of carefree youth to the solid responsibilities of adult life. While it is thus an important milestone in your life, it need not be one of terrifying possibilities. Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind. It is not a matter of rock and roll and supple knees, it is a quality of imagination, a vigor of emotions, a freshness of the deep springs of life. In a horse race the fastest animal gets the inside track, thus gaining advan- tage over those crowded away from the rail. Similarly, in the competitive race of men with men in business, in industry, and in the professions, the high school and college graduates have an inevitable advantage over the untrained non- graduates, in that they do things more rapidly and more efficiently. Again I congratulate you. WH r Assisifmzt Pfincipal Gordon M. Cotton 174x111 of Girfx R,gi.wlmr MRS, liIiRNICllf B. GALII MRS. O. R. HAI.l2 C Z! 72 0 0 5 6 l 7' S Miss Katherine Keller Mrs. Rhoda S. Medals are given to winners in individual events, and trophies are awarded to the debate teams. During the past tall se- mester, six trophies have been won and thirty- four medals. Many benefits are gained by participating in the speech activities. Members not only im- prove their speech but also learn of turrent events and governmental policies and atitiairs. The making of new friends at the tournaments is also invaluable to the members. Members of the Speakers lforum often be- come members of the National liorensic League by acquiring service points eath time a pre- pared speech is given. The annual variety show, FORUM liOI.l.llfS, proved exceptionally successful this year. The proceeds of this event are used to finance the out-of-town tournaments. Officers are: President. At Reagan is found one of the oldest and most honored bands in the state. Wfhen organized some thirty years ago, the band was a military unit composed of boys. Under the direction of Leslie Kohlman, Mrs. O. W. Bogard, Charles Lindsey, jay M. Brandstetter, and john Robbins, the Band has grown and improved. There are many factors which contribute to the high distinction of the band. Among these are the accomplishments in the past with support from the student body and Boosters Club. Some activities in which the band participates include Rice's first home football game, marching contests, music festivals, the May Fete, graduation exercises, and tal-:ing part in all Reagan football games. Last year the band was invited to hear the United States Marine Band and to play for the All'City Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Harry Robert XVilson from Columbia University. Also, every year we are privileged to have many of our stu- dents win positions in All-State Band and the Youth Symphony. Entrance requirements are as follows: a good voice, above average sight- reading ability, a genuine love for singing, and a spirit of cooperation. It is possible to have an audition with the director to join the club immediately with her approval. Directed by Miss Anna Marie Olson, the Choral Club has had the privilege of singing for many organizations, some of which included P.T.A., Houston Symphony Orchestra, Veterans' Hospital, Texas State Teachers' Association, and the men's Service Clubs in the Heights. The members also take part in assembly programs, Commencement exercises, the Baccalaureate Service, and Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter programs. They strive to put forth a message through every song, from the light humor- ous songs to the serious music of great composers, such as Bach and Handel, and the moving modern arrangements of Fred Warirrg. The requirements and standards for getting into the Glee Club are very high. Above all, the girls must have excellent conduct. They also have to have some knowledge of music, preferably Music 1, 2, 3, and 4. The girls' favorite songs are: The Lord is My Shepherd, The Heavens are Telling, Alleluja, Beautiful Savior, and es- pecially liked is Eternal Life. This year the club was privileged to sing with the combined music groups at the Texas State Teachers Association Convention. Along with hard work, the girls also have their fun. The most enjoyable outside, activity is the annual picnic and initiation, which is usually held in the fall. To finish the year the Glee Club has a party in the music room and presents the officers for the following year. This tour has proved to be both interesting and educational. This year they spent four days in Washington, D.C., making tours through the White House, the Capitol building, the Smithsonian Institute, Arlington Cemetery, and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. It operates on the motto of service to others. Representatives from the junior Red Cross have attended the meetings at the Council this year and have brought back to their Thursday afternoon meetings the decisions made. The Reagan chapter has promptly acted on such vital matters as funds for a local deten- tion home and Hungarian relief. The Christmas Bureau of the Red Cross supplied the Reagan chapter with a needy family for Christmas. A basket of food and clothing was presented to this family before Christmas. These four girls are the leaders of their class. Each captain has a group of girls or a team of which she is in charge. Generally, the captains select their team. It is her job to lead them in all activi- ties, help with their skills, help grade the team on ability and skills, and be responsible for her team's conduct and co-operation. It is plain to see that the position of team captain holds much responsibility and work. It is always an honor for a girl to become a team captain. These girls are in Miss Mehr's fifth period Senior class. Not one time were they beaten. These girls should certainly, be congratulated for their ability and work in winning the championship. Distributive Education The Distributive Education Club keeps busy all year with their program and many activities. Among their many activities is the annual em- ployer-employee banquet. The purpose of this is to create better understanding between the D.E. students and their employers. This year the banquet was held on April 2 at the Shamrock-Hilton Hotel. Another annual event is the State Convention held on March 1 and 2 in San Antonio, Texas. Delegates to this convention are chosen on the basis of various contests, the winners of which become the delegates.
