Foreword f f f It has been the purpose of the staff, in the presentation of the 1940 Pennant, to portray, more than ever before, student activities, to honor those students who participate in these activities, and to recognize the one or ones who have made these activities possible. Bogard Mrs. Byrd Creekmore Assistant Principal Dean Of Girls TO THE CLASS OF 1940: If you have not already made out a program for your life, do so now, and map it out with a sense of direction, but with no sense of obstacles. , Ninetyffive per cent see the obstacles that have to be overcome in order to reach a coveted goalfand back away. The other five per cent sec the objective- and press forward. Small men painstakingly survey the first obstacle which dwarfs their natures and foreshortens their vision. Great men with a sense of direction have their confidence and determination which trample obstacles underfoot. History records the success of men with objectives and a sense ot direction. Oblivion is the position of small men overwhelmed by obstacles. R. H. WILLIAMS, Principal. 'W' Miss Mary Elizabeth Alderson English Miss Louise Allison English Hubert I. Society f f f The National Honor Society Honor, the byfword of civilization, has been for centuries the most precious possession of mankind, but national honor has always been preconceived and dedicated to the convenf ience of its interpretation by individual nations. However, in 1919 national honor was given a new meaning and dedicated to a new cause. The principals of secondary schools of the United States discovered that the best place to foster national honor is in the public schools and to that end organized the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. The purpose of this society is to encourage high standards of scholarship combined with leadership, service, and character. In accordance with these principles, John H. Reagan, became one of 5000 schools to have a National Honor Society Chapter, on April 8, 1935. Since that time, this society has been sponsored by R. H. The band proved to be very popular with the junior high schools when it played for both Hamilton and Hogg. It has played for both the Fall and Spring Music Festivals, and won second division honors in the Regional Band Contest. During the year the orchestra has played for Hogg and Hamilton junior High School assembly programs. It played in both Fall and Spring Music Festivals and competed in the Regional Music Contest in Huntsville. The orchestra played also at many special audi' torium programs and assemblies. They have given programs at the Central Presbyterian Church and the Art Museum. They were the only high school glee club honored by the privilege of singing at the Art Museum. At both the Regional and National Vocal Contests the Girls' Clee Club carried away first division honors, the only school music group to do so. Under the direction of Charles S. Lindsay, the Choral Club has sung for the Heights Woman's Club, Bering Memorial Methodist Church, St. Marks Methodist Church, First Methodist Church, and for assembly programs. They gave a program at Heights Christian Church and Hogg Junior High School. They won first division honors in the Regional Vocal Contest and second division in the National Contest. It's a Sporting World f f f .ug Such is the general idea around Reagan when these eight coaches get started on varied class work, intramurals, contests, interfschool games, and Interscholastic League events during the year. Beginning something new in the field of girls' physical education this year, Miss Ida Mehr, Mrs. Irma Huebner, Miss Virginia Clampitte, and Mrs. Opal Cowan propose, by new methods, to bridge the gap between junior high school days and college physical education with a program of skilled planning and individuality wherein each teacher instructs each Reagan girl for six weeks of every semester. Pete Dowling takes to the spotlight in the picture above during assembly period, while Coaches Lamar Camp and Charles Bowden greet the old camerafman with touchdown smiles. Coach Joe Turner, all dressedfupflooking and on his way to the Beaumont Track Meet, must have known he was going to win before he started. And sporting through it all is Reagan's own mascot, Frosty!-with a Hi, Kids, you all know mell' They Le the y f f Coaches: Camp Bowden Dowling Manager: lack XVagncr Captain: Pete Slaughter Although it was highlighted by victories over Jefferson Davis, their traditional rivals, Milby and Thomas Jefferson of San Antonio, the season which the Bulldogs closed November 25 with a thrilling 1943 loss to the San Jacinto Bears was an unsuccessful one for the Reagan Bulldogs. The record is explainable in that the '39 team was the lightest and most inexperienced eleven in years. The Maroon and White line had only three '38 lettermen returning. They were Slaughter, Burgess, and Pritchett, but at the beginning of the season the fleet Burgess was shifted to halfback- the season starting with Roman and Burgess in the backfield-Ford and Slaughter on the line. Roman Crashes Through f f f The Bulldogs began their season at Buff Stadium with a 39f6 win over Thomas jefferson of San Antonio. The Heights football machine unleashed power and speed in the form of smashing Lincoln Roman, and busy fleet halfback Burgess. Next the Reagan team bucked against Austin, Texas, to lose a heart breaker '7f6. The Austin, Texas, game started a losing streak which did not break until the Davis game. During this period the Canines lost to Conroe 2049 when one of their touchdowns was called back, 15fO to Stephen F. Austin, the city's No. l team, 13fO to the Sam Houston Tigers, and 24fO to the strong No. 2 Lamar team. However, one of the season's high points came November 9 when John H. Reagan beat its old rival, Jeff Davis. Following was a 13f6 victory over Milby's strongest team in years, and the season ended with the Bulldogs and Buffaloes tied for fifth place. Yeah, Maroon! Throw a Goal for Reagan f f f The 1939'-10 Reagan hasketlwall quintet placed fifth in the city hasketlaall race, winning live out of their twelve starts. Individual standouts were Pat McMichael, guard and captain, ,lack Dynamite Vxfagner, flashy little forward, and Tom Sinclair, tall forward. The Bulldogs hegan their season with a startling upset over Jeff Davis, shading the Panthers 21 to 19 but suffered a 10 to 40 defeat at the hands of Lamar. The Heights Quintet picked up a 31 to 25 victory over the San ,lacs but dropped their next to the lvlilby Buffs. The Reagan cagers retaliated with a 25 to 23 victory over the Austin aggregation but lost their next five tilts: to Sam Houston 23 to 23, Davis 19 to 40, to Lamar 20 to 31, to San Jacinto 20 to 40, and to Milby 'li to 28. The Bulldogs rallied in their last two games, and with the improved playing of Tom Sinclair, defeated Lamar 27 to 25 and Sam Houston 25 to '20 to end the season. -1 ., - -' 1-, , ' vt - GROVER NCONAN-Fine defensive forward: han' dled ball wellg back next year . . . The 1940 Bulldog doubles' combination of Norpoth and Tabola competed seven times through the regional competition. Included in these tourneys were outfofftown meets: at Victoria, where the Reagan netters lost in the finals, at Beaumont, where the doubles' combination won 6f3, 6f1, and at Corpus Christi, where Tabola and Norpoth entered sepaf rately and each entered the finals, with Tabola taking the victor's laurels. The Bulldogs played their last practice sets at River Caks, where Norpoth lost in the finals and Tabola fell in the semifinals. The doubles' team entered official competition for the first time in the City Meet and won 6'2, 6f1, 6f3, and entered district competition, where they repeated to win 6fl, 6f3, 6f2. Their district victory led them to the Regional Meet, where they won 6f3, 6fO, 6f3. Then on to state f f f Noonan, Tabola and Norpoth will return next year. J 'W-,V 1 , . They entered their first tourney at Liberty, placing third. The Bulldogs repeated for another third at Cameron in their next trial, and really hit their stride to take first place at the Beaumont meet. At Conroe, the home team took first, defeating the Heights boys by a quarter of a point. The San Jacinto relays made it tvvo heartfbreakers in a row, with Reagan dropping the meet to Davis by one point, but the Bulldogs retaliated with a irst place in their next start, Livingston. The Jeff Davis team defeated the Reagan boys at the district meet, although the latter took three Hrst places: Raymond Coons in the pole vault, Lloyd Morris in the mile, and Kenneth Lindow in the broad jump. Standfouts and cofcaptains were Raymond and Kenneth. Raymond took three Hrsts in the pole vault events and ran on five winning relay teams, While Kenneth was undefeated in the broadfjump event during the eight meets in which he participated, Lloyd, breaking the mile record at the city meet, and Raymond and Kenneth representing Reagan at State Ivieet where Kenneth placed Hrst in the broadfjump. Fred Maxwell of Reagan led the Held to win first place for the second time in two years, missing the record by 7 seconds. Time was 13:21:05 The Bulldogs were engaged in three meets during the season. Their first was a dual meet with Austin. The Canincs were the victors, winning with first, second, third, fifth, sixth, and seventh places. The second was a dual meet with Milby. The Canines easily walked off with the victory by winning first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth places. The City Meet was another easy win for the Reagan harriers. They captured first, fourth, fifth, ninth, and tenth places. The five lettermen placed in the following order: Fred Maxwell, Buddy Norris, Cliff Johnston, Melvin Harper, and jack Lemmon. Returning lettermen for 1940 are Captain Jack Lemmon and Cliff Johnston. Returning squadmen are Murphy Thibodeaux, Henry Best, Cloyce Walker, and Billy Reese. The 1939 Reagan crossfcountry squad was unusually enthusiastic. It had plenty of spirit, intestinal fortitude, and willingness to sacrifice good times to keep training. A collection was taken among members of the fall class to buy a trophy which was presented to Coach Joe Turner at the Annual CrossfCountry Banquet. X 4 'f flfzf wwf: 5 751, , 'I' 3 , , Am!
