VVe cherish the Reagan standards, This graduating youth that stands Giving the game all we've got, Looking forward with shining eyes, Playing the fair way, the square way, Reaching out with eager hands Tasting defeat, but beaten not. To grasp the world and hold it high, To take possession from this day, XYe are what Reagan stands for, To ring the world with vigorous cry, Vve are its hopes, ideals, And wrap it up in laughter gay. lts purpose, and goal incarnate, VVe are the power it wields. This parting, sweet with triumph Not cornered by walls of brick, Of four long years, yet quickly gone, Not bounded by knowledge it gives, Saddens the gladdened hearts within us But eternal here in the hearts of its youth Brings an ache to marching nn. Y The spirit of Reagan lives! CLASS HISTORY By HELEN ROVVLAND, Historian The class of 1935 took flight from the Airport of Sophomore in the airplane, Century of Progress . and quickly rose to the low clouds of Bewilderment. ln this state we rode through choppy air pockets: but piloted by our president, Rupert Johnson, assisted by Marie Bova, vicefpresident, and Dorothy Neel, secretary and treasurer, we came to the serene day of May Fete. Members on board who participated in this were Wilbur Swenson and Mary Catherine Wagner. Duke and Duchess. Margaret Frances Roland, Marie Bova, Juanita Byrd, and Geralf dine Bova, maids of honor. We landed at the Junior Airport and took on a new crew consisting of pilot Charles Martin, president, Dorothy Neel, vicefpresident, Joyce Kennedy, reporter, Arthur Stokley, secretary, Virgil Asbell, sergeantfatfarms, and Alice Mae Moody, treasurer. Under this able crew we ascended into the clouds of Knowing More. Alice Mae Moody added to our achievements by winning first place in extemporaneous speaking. Merle McWilliams won hrst place in tennis doubles. We landed for a very special occasion at Sylvan Beach for JuniorfSenior Day. On elated wings we soared into the fragrant clouds of the May Day. Vernon Lorino and Margie Guest were Duke and Duchess with Marguerite Scelles, Marian Moss, Dorothy Weed, Isabel Akin, Martha Lee McClure, and Cecile Marianna as maids of honor. The Century of Progress ascended from their stopover at the Senior Airport with a fresh crew. We were piloted by Freeman Bokenkamp, president, Leslie O'Connor, vicefpresif dent, Alice Mae Moody, secretary, Charlie Martin, sergeantfatfarmsg Mary Lou Garrett, treasurer. and Elizabeth Boyle, reporter. to the Clouds of High Attainment. We had a most distinguished guest aboard, Wyatt Collier. who was elected president of the Houston High School Speakers Forum. J. T. Lamb. another distinguished member, broke the cross country record. The old time was thirteen minutes and fortyffive seconds and the new, thirteen minutes and thirtyfnine seconds. Another celebrity aboard was Margie Guest, who was elected the most popular girl at Reagan. In March the plane was caught for a brief flight in the winds of lnterscholastic Contests. Members of the class distinguishing themselves in this tornado were Guilda Scarborough, best debate speaker in the city, Lawson Lipscomb, most outstanding actor in the one-act play conf tests, and Lillian Burbank, first in charcoal drawing. The Reagan Statesman was ranked first among the Houston high school papers. After this point the soft clouds of the May Fete wrapped the 'kCentury of Progress . Queen Helen of the House of Rowland and King Vernon of the House of Lorino reigned. Members of their court were Spencer Lewis and Marguerite Scelles, duke and duchess: Edith Hardey, Esther Ruth Schorch, Earl Clements, Isabel Akin, maids, Carrie Ruth Sloop, Mary Lou Garrett, Betty Oliver, Margaret Frances Roland, princesses, William Allen, W. Hubbell, Freeman Bokenkamp, princes: Marjorie Guest, maid of honor, Gertrude Webb, May O'Rourke, Marion Moss, Wilma Ray, ladies in waiting, Maurine Shelton and Lillian Allen, jesters. We landed at the Airport on Commencement Day and soared once more into the Clouds of Life on a never ending journey. 4? This corps consists only of a rifle unit. A hand was added, but later discontinued. The training is a benefit to the student of military science in as much as the peace of the world rests upon the shoulders of the coming generation. If the youths of today are not taught how to meet these problems, their lives will be failures. By learning the lessons of obedience, selffsacrifice, and respect for higher authority, they learn the lesson of leadership. If our country ever again is embroiled in a national emergency, many of the exfmembers, who are now taking an advanced course in military science to equip themselves better as officers of our Army Reserve Corps, will be made leaders to direct the forces of the destiny of our country. Among those receiving commissions in the civilian components of our national army are many exfcadets from Reagan. The organization is to train the student how to meet an emergency as well as how to take his rightful place in time of peace, when the value of discipline, obedience, loyalty, and clear thinking is necessary. The places of responsibility and trust in colleges, as well as in business, have been forthcoming to the cxfmembers who showed themselves capable of such ap' pointments. Three times in the past five years the Reagan Corps has proved its ability in spring competition with the cadet corps of the other senior high schools of the uty, by winning the R. O, A. trophy, which is presented each year by the Housf ton Chapter, Reserve Officers Association to the best cadet corps in the senior high schools of the city. Since it was first organized, the Reagan Cadet Corps has been under the dif reetion of Majcir john L. Lee, who has always received valuable assistance from the principal, assistant principal, and dean. The corps this year is officered by Captain Douglas Sandberg, First Lieutenants Roy Irvine and Raymond Olivier, and Second Lieutenant Wilford Wilsrun. This portion of the annual is dedicated to the past members of the organization who have gone forward to assume their civic responsibilities. 4 Raynionrl Aflams Pete Arinftrniig Jack Arniixtczul Lee Rny Axliiiiore Robert lliwnik, Louis Czlrlry James Cargill George lirissara Presley Clialiners Keppy Clizilmcrs Pay Clzu-la Ed Crriiwzly John Ci'ziwf4n'il JEill1fiafilll'flw Gilbert llcnmn VYJilt1'v'l'li6lric'll Xwlvn lfziriieft Ima' l m'i'ar lnwlvli Fallnn Km-niun Fickex Xlilinn Frzmlv lirml Genrglv l,:iwri-noe Grmtcr ,lite liwin Rifllzirfl llallvnlwr C'li:nAlcf Hifey Altnn lloker -lnlin -lfiCl'ibtr11 VYilli:im Iohle lCrlw:n'rl Jolniymi Ill gel' BOYS GLEE CLUB .y DR.-Xfli R lilill, Prwirl K. l..,lnI1nmn KCIlllClll.l4l1'fl'Yll RUF- Kim: llruu' Kin-ll l.c-lclnn Knngln Ross Lzinglilin l'li'IlllSl' l,icfi-Nte llarry l.ilL'lill?ll't Aubrey Hung Cmn-all Klang l-'rank Nlr'l'1ig5:a1't Arthur Klillci' Xxvillizlnl Xl imsltu Charles Mnsgruve Thai :lure Xlnllcnwcig i nt T. ,l. FOOTBALL SEASON In spite ol' the fact that only three lettcrmcn returned to Reagan's otherwise inexperienced squad. the season may he said to have heen a successlul one. Reagan met the Milby Buffaloes in its debut of the district race and won it in a tivefininute overtime thriller. The score was 31529. The Davis quintet, defending champions of the district, then knocked the Iviaroons from their perch with a 2907 victory. A new record was made against the Canines when Young Bussey of San Jacinto scored 26 points to lead the Bears to a onefsided victory. Sam Houston, an old traditional rival, was the next team to take revenge on the Bulldogs. The second half of the season opened with IVIilby's giving the lviaroons a lacing. The Davis Panthers added insult to injury with another victory. Then came the nwhatfpricefglory'' game, the game that made the season some' what satisfying. The San Jacinto team paid dearly for its record against the lviaroons when they were decisively trounced by the Reaganites with a 3426 score. The last district game also resulted in a Iviaroon victory, this time over the highly touted Sam Houston Bengals. Robert Miners, the captain and only letterman, performed excellently as a leader of the team. Robert was runnerfup for highpoint honors of the district. The whole squad deserved much credit for their part in representing the school in this sport. A postfseason game with Port Neches resulted in a 3623 victory for Reagan. V+ -C Robert Doctor Push Shot Mciers. Robert proved to be a very capable captain. At the forward posif tion, he was runnerup for highfpoint honors in the city. Doc was chosen on one of the All-city teams. '34, '35. Harold Sis Palmer. At the last of the season Palmer was as fine a guard as any in the city. Freeman, being a strong, husky lad, was capable of lasting through any game. '35, Walter Gabby James. Walter made a fine running mate for Moers and was also chosen on one of the Allfcity teams. james's passing was accurate and his shooting deadly. '35. Philip Philbert Reynolds. Philip showed the same fight on the hardwood floor that he did on the gridiron. He teamed with Palmer to give the Maf roons a fine pair of stellar guards. '35, Jake Lover Wilk. jake at the forward position was very fast in working the ball down the floor. jake, although small, could rough it with the toughest of players. '35. Bryan Pelican Lawson. Pelican was a very valuf able man under the basket. At jumping center Lawson was springy enough to control the tipfoif much of the time. '35. Maurice Freshman Holdgraf. Maurice was the team's pinchhitter. He played any position assigned him. QB5. Charles Cotton Bryant. Cotton was manager of the Reagan Cagers and one of their heartiest boost' ers. Spirits of the mighty had fallen: but their memory brightens the page of Texas history and they are hailed as founders of new institutions, and the patterns of illustrious action. ln Texas today, in every field of in- dustry, commerce and art, Texans are carrying on in the spirit and fi- delity to ideals of their brave pre- decessors.
