Yet it cannot image the wonderful spirit that has hovered o'er our school for fifty golden years, this spirit lives eternal in the lives of the men and women who created it. These same .intangibles of human relationship will endure and will permeate the life of Polytechnic on its new campus in San Fernando Valley. This Polytechnic Student, a store house of golden memories, sends our thoughts flying into the past, we discover here some little thing . . . a school paper, yellow with age . . . a crumpled program . . . a page from an old book, which will take us back along the golden path to yesteryear. So may this collection of scraps and baubles, of faces, of friends, of places, written on the pages of our lives at John H. Francis Polytechnic High School, be magically pieced together into a colorful pattern which may reveal this wonderful spirit of Poly. QI O s, ' 0 This is our golden opportunity to pay tribute to the person, who since the days he was a stu- dent here, has been the motivating force in keeping alive the marvelous spirit of Polytech- nic High School. He it is -- with a keen sense of humor, yet ever thoughtful and considerate - who has been the vanguard of those intangibles which pattern this Spirit of our splendid school. Fundamentally a teacher, he understands and encourages the best in youth. With ability undenied, with dignity that commands respect, and with an inherent tenderness and broad mindedness that tempers his judgments, he has won and held the affections and fidelity of the student body and faculty. It is with pride and sincere affection that we dedicate this store-house of memories, our Golden Year Book, to our beloved boys' vice- principal, leader, friend - Edwin C. Franklin. MR. EDWIN C. FRANKLIN Boys' Vice-Principal Mr. Edwin C. Franklin is known throughout the city as an authority in sports organization. Because he wanted his beloved Poly to be a singing school, he donned his famous red vest, and in his iovial way led the songfests. His glad hand can also be a firm hand, this is reflected in the behavior of the student body. Because of the wonderful Poly spirit which he has helped to engender, Poly won the Sportsmanship trophy in both the Northern and Eastern Leagues. MRS. IONA J. LORD Girls' Vice-Principal Mrs. Iona Lord is a royal good sport! Her character- izations in student and faculty productions will be long remembered. The best government is that which teaches us to govern ourselves. With this in mind, the boys at Poly, acting upon an idea of Principal John H. Francis, began a Self Government in l904. However, Self Govern- ment as we know it was instituded by Prin- cipal Dunn in 1932. Poly was one of the first schools on the coast to have a Self Government. Not to be outdone by the guys and fired up by the success of Boys' Self Govemment, the gals soon started a Self Government for themselves. When true Self Government was begun in 1923, the merit system was also created. EMIKO GUSHI Winter Editor GRACE LEW Summer Editor The Commercial Student, the original Poly annual, was published in 1902 at the time when Poly was a commercial high school. This year book is one of Poly's cherished traditions, one that has been carried on for fifty years. As time went on, many changes were made in this pub- lication. In 1905 when Poly moved to its present location, the name of the year book was changed to The Polytechnic Student. Soon other innova- tions were made. A wide variety of themes, origi- nally illustrated by the art staff, appeared in books of varying sizes, some small, others large: in different covers, some heavy paper, others fabricoidp in changing content, some full of written material with few pictures, others full of photographs with little writing. This Polytechnic Student of 1955, commemorating the Fiftieth Anniversary, presents its theme, The Polytechnic Story, in both picture and word, inclosed in a cover of gold. il by v .-x.. if FLORENCE TAKEUCHI DOROTHY FONG OSSIE BUTLER D9Si9f1el' Senior Editor Publicity Mursuxo Nlsi-HHARA MARY LOUIE Cgpy Editor Underclass Editor Foreign Sl'-'dem Q ,- Gsones woNo KENNETH nous '12 'wks , A-Ju... fs lr ., or 1 'J 1 W .17 . To ensnare with photographs the tempo of present school life and to bring into graphic prominence the history and the inimitable spirit of Poly has been the goal of the yearbook staff. In reproducing accurately and pictorially the activities of our school, the editor is appreciative ofthe unstinted services of her capable assistants. This is the place where you would find PoIy's adveriturous junior scientists, collecting shells, crabs, and other specimens. This club is made up of Polyites with good grades, citizenship and, as you would ex- pect, an interest in science. Borrowing from the ancient Romans, this group is officially dubbed Magistri, which in Latin means teachers. lt fits them like a glove, for these are the Future Teachers of America- the ones who may someday be teaching your small fry their ABC's. Interest in the field of education is the main qualification needed to ioin this group. Lose something? Chances are that it was received, housed, and retumed by the Thrift Commission, which accepted the responsibility of caring for such carelessly misplaced obiects. This group not only handled the lost and found departmfent, sold stamps and bonds, but when it came to carrying out their main purpose, the promotion of thrift, the Scots had nothing on them. Held within these pages are treasured nuggets of our school life-incidents and events which, we hope, have succeeded in captur- ing some of the Poly Spirit. As time flows onward, may the treasures from this chest of memories be brought to your mind. To the following people, we wish to express our appreciation for the time and effort they have contributed to this annual: Mr. Paul Kluth, our annual advisor, Mrs. Beth Fennessey, Mr. Frank Frank, Mrs. Georgia Jones, Mrs. Mariorie Johnson, Mrs. Carol Walley, and our printers, Mr. Thomas and Mr. Pearson. Our thanks also go to Mr. Eddie Irwin and the Optimist Staff, A.S.B.O. and the Leadership class for the publicity, Mr. Charles Martin and the Student Store for handling the finances, Sterret Studio for the individual pictures, Mr. Hewett of the Columbia Lithograph Company, Spence Air Photo for the aerial photograph of Poly, and Mr. Phil Clark of S. K. Smith Company. Finally a well-deserved thank-you to our very loyal alumni and the John H. Francis Polytechnic student body for their support and interest in making this book a reality.
