Many activities have taken place in sports, social events and new types of classroom studies. There has never before been a year in which the student body has been made up of boys and girls representing a greater spread of foreign speaking groups, than this year. Since UNESCO is the United Nations' Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, it might 'be well to designate Polytechnic as the UNESCO High School of the world. What finer compliment could be paid to us! Visiting speakers in our auditorium have made such remarks as: I have come here to speak to you on the subject of democracy but observe you are practicing it. This is a compliment we deeply appreciate. American high schools are established and maintained with two objectives: helping the individual to make the most of his talents and 12, helping the student to appreciate his country, as well as to work for its betterment. President Truman, in an Ameri- , t can Education Week statement, de- scribed the schools as Custodians of Freedom. This is a time, he added, which challenges our coming citizens to grow in stature and wis- dom. It is they who for the future must strengthen the foundations of freedom at home and stand shoulder to shoulder with other freedom lov- ing peoples throughout the world. In conclusion, may I say that I appreciate the line work done by the winter and summer classes this year. These groups, under the leadership of efficient and devoted teachers, have been the leaders of the student body in the work described above. The best of good fortune to all of you. J. G. Goobssu. Page Six The Vice-Princi pals I Mrs. Iona Lord, known for her kindness and friendly disposition, is Girls' Vice-Principal. She is an active worker with the Pi Lambda Theta, Beta Chi Theta, Theta Alpha Delta, and Phi Kappa Phi. She is a past president of the Rio Hondo branch of the American Association of University Women and is a member of the state chapter. A graduate of Las Vegas, Nevada, High School, she attended the University of California at Berkeley, where she received her bachelor-'s degree in science, and later she received her master' degree, also in science, at the University of Southern California. Mr. Edwin C. Franklin, Boys' Vice-Principal, has held this position for ten years. A graduate of Poly, he went to USC, lettering in track and football in both schools. After teaching at Long Beach, Banning, and Santa Paula, he headed the math department and be- came the Vice-Principal of Eagle Rock High School before coming to Polytechnic. Mr. Edwin C. Miss Robertson has won her way into the hearts of Polyites, and it is with much regret that they bid her goodbye. Although they look forward to the return of Mrs. Yerlces, they would be very happy to lceep Miss Robertson here in Los Angeles, too. Mrs. Julia Gohrevhl. Reliriugj Mrs. julia Gobrecht, Polytechnic alumna, retires this June from a career of many years of teaching as a member of the Poly faculty in the commercial department. In fact, she has spent all her professional life in the service of her Alma Mater. Mrs. Gobrecht has helped thousands of Polyites on their way to happy, prosperous lives as useful members of the business world. Her friends who have gone out from this great school are legion, and as she, too, now bids Polytechnic aclieu she leaves an empty place which cannot be filled by anyone else. Her friendly, charming smile and her deep understanding of her students' problems have been encouragement and inspiration to those who have had the privilege of attending her classes. And so, although they regret her going, they are happy that she will now enjoy the much-coveted leisure which she has so justly earned. The organizations of Poly are following the tradition their predecessors planted in the school. ASBO and the various clubs and special classes form a definite pattern in the life of Poly. Like their pioneer forefathers, the students strive to gather gold-not in the material form, but rather in knowledge and friendship. tags-ii.. 431: F. n ,C it ' l, '74-'- Q- -15 1. 6?- A9150 Mrs. Marjorie johnson Sponsor NV'-19 Elected in an open student body election, Hugo Velasquez, ASBO president, and Gloria Moreno, ASBO vice-president, worked to- gether with their cabinet to provide a demo- cratic government for the 2,120 students of Poly during the winter term. Poly vs. Vvilson Feeling the absences of Jack Anderson and Kenji Watanabe, the Parrots fell victim to the Wilson Mules in one of the biggest upsets of the season, when they went down to a score of 20 to 0. Poly vs. Lincoln One defeat didn'r stop the Parrots. They bounced back to edge out Lincoln in the first of the school's night games since the war, at Wrigley Field. Sparked by the brilliant work of 'Rompin' Tom Irvine, Poly racked up another victory of 6 to 0, throwing Poly in a four way tie for first place. f Vnrsily F Front row: Howard Summer, Jeri Moler, Buddy Pascoe, Ray Cain, Thomas Irvine, jack Anderson, George Quintero, Danny Green, james McNees, Ernest Franco. Poly vs. Belmont In the final and most crucial game of the season, Belmont nipped Poly by a single touchdown, shattering Parrot hopes for Milk Bowl fame. Because Franklin beat Belmont and Wilson beat Poly the Parrots ended with fourth place in the Northern grid loop. All in all, Poly had a wonderful football season. The team fought hard, and even though they didn't take a first place, they did achieve a moral victory, through the defeat of their oldest rivals, Franklin and Lincoln. oollmll Players ' Row 4: Rollin Clements, Norton Lee, Yuk Nakasako, Jerry Copeland, Arthur Cole, jatk Hamilton, Fred Lishman, George Atrarian, Ardis Irvine. The second team is composed of George Apana, guardg Frank Quon, guard, Leonard Carucci, center, Robert Brown, forward, and Payne Butler, forward. In most of the contests the scoring was either very heavy or very close. At the close of the season, Poly was tied with Wfilson for first place honors, but previous wins by Poly over Wilson gave the Mechanics the title of Northern League Champs. In the city tournament the five Poly baslceteers con- quered all comers and defeated every opponent they faced except in the two final games. Poly placed fourth in the city. At center the team had an out- standing player and scorer in Lemuel Lomack, who. was a great factor in the hot contest with Wilson. The player who really showed the way in this game was Clezell Colen. At guard, the midgets had Wally Wongiand Tillson, two newcomers to Poly. f I ii fp af' fn W , y . Page One Hundred Eighteen Traditional at Poly is the annual election and corona tion of the May Queen, which is sponsored by the Girls League. The girls of the student body vote to select the queen, her maid of honor, and her five ladies in waiting To be eligible for this high honor, a girl must first of all have shown interest in her school by serving in at least one secondary organization. Moreover, she must This year Diane I-Iarouif was the popular choice for queen, and her maid of honor was Lorraine Rhoads The queen reigned over the activities of May Day The coronation ceremonies in a fourth period assembly highlighted the festivities. All of the girls enjoyed a Braille Department All blind high school students in Los Angeles come to Poly. This past year the Braille department has had twenty-eight students enrolled, fifteen boys and thirteen girls. The Braille rooms have special equipment including special typewriters, news magazines, and many classic novels. These special students are enrolled in the same classes with the rest of the school and compete with them whenever possible. Mrs. Estelle Hurst, head of the department, believes that although they have a strike against them, they work all the harder to malce up for it and often come out on top in scholastic ability. Los Angeles is one of the few cities in California that does have a Braille department, and Poly is glad that it is located here. Hard of Hearing' Wfith 28 students enrolled, Poly's deaf and hard of hearing department, headed by Mrs. Elizabeth Van Sistine, is the only one of its kind in the high schools of Los Angeles. This department has been located here since 1913, and it is one of most advandced systems in the United Statets. The students study in regular class- rooms and take special courses in lip reading and speech. They are encouraged not to use the sign language because 'ithey have to live in a hearing world-not in a world of sign language.
