CLASS HISTORY In September, 1944, we began our high school career as very “green” freshmen. Since we had been in the basement with the high school in the eighth grade, we did not feel as lost as we could have. Mr. Dean and Miss Lassiter were our homeroom teachers and in the early spring our grade mothers honored us at a picnic in the Bower’s pasture. After a delicious lunch we all enjoyed a game of softball. After a much too short summer vacation we found ourselves at school once more, this time as sophomore under the direction of Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Coleman. At times we thought we would never leave the ninth grade, but most of us made it. This year we discovered that we had an actor in our class, for one of our boys was chosen to play the leading role in the Junior Play. Again we were favored by our grade mothers, this time with a weiner roast at the Country Club. Slowly but surely we were climbing to the top, finding ourselves juniors in 46 with Miss Barkley and Miss Yeattes as our sponsors. We lost Miss Yeattes at Christmas, and Miss Woodall, a hometown girl, took her place. Fifteen members of the class were dubbed members of the Beta Club at a party and dance in the school and nine of these were marshals at commencement. By the time we were juniors, almost all the boys were taking part in some sport, and many of the girls were playing basketball. Our class was well represented in the Monogram Club. Two of us were chosen as members of the annual staff, many of us were on the Seer staff. The biggest event of the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet in April. The Home Economics girls prepared and served a delicious dinner at the Country Club. A delightful program was given and this was followed by a dance. We found that all the study and work was not in vain for our long- hoped-for Senior year came at last and we were ready for it 33 strong. Everyone was kept quite busy with the annual, Seer , sports, and, last but not least, school work. We ordered our class rings in the early fall and made plans for a Senior Play and a trip to Washington. Mary Alice Turner, Class Historian. 12
