DocToR Jon-IN c:.oRRlE Do you know this man? Our school was named after Dr. john Gorrie, the American physician who in- vented mechanical refrigeration. His invention was a result of experiments he made to lower the temperature of fever patients. His book, Apparatus for the Artificial Production of Ice in Tropical Climate explains the efforts. He was granted a patent on his inventionyin 1851. ' Dr. Gorrie was born in Charleston, S. C. but spent most of his life in Apalachicola, Florida. It was here he invented his ice machine while treating fever patients. A monument to his memory was erected in Apala- chicola in 1900. In 1914 the state of Florida placed his statue in Statuary Hall at Washington, D. C.
