' ■ Tyt ' X X ' ■!y : :- ' ) ■ ' ' ' s ' -s YC „. .i riO .- - ril ' h ' f K K Patriot 84-85 Adviser: Mr. Richard Garcia Editors-. Maria Martinez Adriana Gonzales John Glenn High School 13520 Shoemaker Ave., Norwalk. California Volume XXIII 2 Dedication eorge and Joyce Dunn at Christmas time. It would seem that there are at least three or four George Dunns occupying our campus all day. There isn ' t a spot on campus that you might not find him at any given moment. Roof is leaking, teachers doors won 7 lock, gym needs setting up. materials need to be delivered: two rings of the hell and George is on his way. His little electric cart must have over 100.000 miles on it. The nice part about it is he does it all with a smile. George was born on April 6. 1948 at 9:20 pm. at Parkview Hospital in Los Angeles. He was raised, however, in the Norwalk and La Mirada area and is a graduate of the class of 1966 from La Mirada High. After high school. George attended Cerritos College for a brief time until he joined the Navy in 1967. He served aboard the USS Nereus. a submarine tender, from 1967-1969. He was discharged from the navy on January 10. 1973. George has been with the Norwalk La Mirada Unified school district for 1 1 years now. having started out at Neff High School. He was transferred to Glenn in 1981 when Neff was closed. George and Joyce Dunn have been married since March 13, 1976, and his family includes his father who lives in Kingman, Arizona and three brothers. Frank lives in Colorado, another brother. Art, lives in Santa Fe Springs, and Richard lives in Tustin. George is the youngest son. When George finally breaks away from school, his hobbies include cartoon drawing and reading books on Colt guns and rifles. One of his main loves in life is his dogs. Brandy, Tanya, and Silver. The kind of service and excellence that our head of plant gives John Glenn faculty, students, and administration made him a logical choice for this year ' s dedication. We, the 1984-85 Patr iot Staff hereby dedicate this book to you, George Dunn. ieorge and his beloved friends. 1 % P Jm _. S . The club ' s purpose was to make money so the members could lake themselves and their parents to educational and fun field trips. The belief was that many students and parents do not get the chance to see many of the exciting and interesting places in Los Angeles and surrounding cities. The students felt a strong desire to include their parents on these trips. The parents could see their kids in a different environment than that of home, and the parents could experience new places. After all. members of this year ' s graduating class, the Class of 1985. were amongst the last group of students to attend this grand old institution. The graduates of Excelsior are everywhere amongst us: older brothers and sisters, teachers, parents, grandparents, and perhaps even great grandparents. Each one of them was on the staff at Glenn when its doors were opened in 1962. Mr. Bell described some of the early days at Glenn when the boys ' gym was in the current counseling area, when students received lunch out of the library building, and when honks from VW ' s. strategically placed around campus, served as passing bells. Our school is young by most standards, but it has now served two generations of Norwalk youth, and these folks represent 2i years of continued quality in our classrooms. There was also a kick-off assembly for our first annual talent show. The idea was to get everybody excited and enthusiastic about this fantastic event Then there was our traditional Christmas Assembly. Christmas wouldn ' t have been the same without the carols, the band, and the beautifully decorated gym which filled us with the spirit of the season. One of the assemblies which had the greatest impact on the students as well as on the faculty, the administration, and invited guests, was the Toma Assembly. This assembly opened our eyes to the many problems of drug and alcohol abuse The multi- media Camfel presentation kept us on the edges of our seats completely involved in the sights and sounds of this wonderful presentation. We also had our annual Cinco de Mayo assembly whose theme accented the cultural diversity which exists amongst our own student body. Students from the nearby feeder schools were invited to perform traditional Mexican dances. Our own accomplished Folklorico group showed as the results of their dedication and hard work. The highlight of this assembly was the announcement of the 1985 Cinco de Mayo Court. Assemblies entertained, informed, and taught while giving a break to the routine of a regular school week. His work usually contains a lesson in morality. Aesop ' s fables are presented differently and more dramatically by connecting them with a story line running through the entire show. The show opens in a supposedly abandoned warehouse where Monica discovers Aesop and his fabulous fable factory in not the best of conditions something is missing! Aesop and his seven part factory are capable of traveling through time and place in search of a moralmaker. With this addition of the factory ' s eighth part, the factory is considered complete. 12 year old Monica ' s discontent with her life and duties makes her the logical candidate for the position, but it ' s a permanent position. She can never return to her home and family. She must make a choice she does and realizes that her responsibilities to herself and her family are not so bad. The amount and quality of academic programs available to our students equaled or bettered that of any other school in our district. The classes offered. ROP. alternative programs. 8th grade Core, advanced placement, and computer programs name hut a few. With the advent of Senate Bill SIS requiring more units for graduation and boosting up the requirements for English, math, and science for future Glenn graduates, the district set about revising curricula. The total program in the basic academic areas was revised in order to meet the state requirements and ultimately to produce a better equipped and more well rounded individual. Clubs were an extension of the classroom offering opportunities to broaden horizons, visit institutions of higher learning, and constantly trying to build a more sensitive aware citizen. ROP offered training in job skills here on campus as well as off. Upward Bound introduced potential college candidates to the world of university life. MESA kindled the interest of math and science oriented students. Tutoring programs were available to give that bit of extra help needed just to understand or perhaps to earn better grades. And for those less studious types, there were programs such as RAP. Opportunity, and EXPO to encourage some of our wayward sheep to come back into the fold. Sports contributed by teaching dedication and stamina. Eighth grade was organized into a separate entity to deal with the unique needs of our youngest members of the student body. The Core teachers brought to them a lot of much needed enthusiasm. Academic excellence was an ongoing goal to be achieved. It was striven for in the required courses, the electives, counseling, alternative programs, and even in the extra- curricular areas. Glenn students excelled in many areas because of the earnest efforts of their teachers, counselors, and administrators. Connie and Desirre combine their knowledge to review for a test. The primary goals were to provide students with exposure to and the opportunity to participate in the arts, to nurture talent by working with professionals in a highly disciplined environment, and to prepare students for higher education in the arts, for internships, or enrichment for these highly motivated students. Students were chosen on the basis of motivation, career interest in the arts, and talent potential. John Glenn swept the competition by nabbing 12 of the coveted positions. Among the sports they played were football, basketball, softball. and track. They completely enjoyed participating in such sports. They also enjoyed the competition of playing against other schools, as it was a new experience for them. Not only did they get to compete against other schools, but they also learned the meaning of true sportsmanship! But it wasn t always work with no play. The eighth grade track team enjoyed a well-deserved pizza party. It was great that these young students were willing to participate in such school activities with their peers, as they promoted school spirit at the same time. We hope to see them next year and the years to come on JV and Varsity teams. Good luck, eighth graders, and see you next year! Don I touch that ball, it ' s mine! lit -  4|i At this rale.
