Well bet you do lots of reminiscing in '49, Fremont W thinking back to the first days, when your Silver Anniversary was 'way off in the future. lt surely was different then - differentpeople, different subjects, different styles, and slang and world! Even you were different, Fremont, till the Earthquake came along and gave you a new theme-song: There'll Be Some Changes Made! Yes -4 things were different then V- surface things. But not deep down, they weren't - not things that matter in high school: friends, and work, and sunshine, and tears, and homework. and teachers, and dreams and songs! CAS you leaf through the book, notice the song titles used on each page 4 all popular since your birthday in l924.l Two and a half decades can't change those things and so you're still going strong, Fremont - still the beloved Alma Mater. Fremont some- what more than five hun- dred students who were to spend their last three years of secondary schooling here. What confusion for these pupils during those first few weeks! They couldnt find classes, lost themselves looking for shops, and fell easy prey to upper classmen's pranks in directing them to our non-existent swimming pool! Gradually they be- came part of the Fremont family by joining clubs and organi- zations, and by making new friends. They were now on their way to becoming a great class. After two and a half years of work and fun, the B-lU's of W'46 were Senior As - O, most Exalted Rank! Their Senior sweaters, a cheerful canary yellow trimmed with brown, were bright spots everywhere on campus. The Senior Tea and the Senior Banquet, highlights of their last year here, were carried out so successfully that they were among the very finest affairs Fremont has boasted. ln caps and gowns of royal blue, the graduating class Cnamed in honor of the one hundredth anniversary of the discovery of gold in Californial marched down the aisle one by one to receive their diplomas. This was their last big affair at their Alma Mater, and they made their farewell a memorable one, as they smiled fwith a tear or twol at the carefree past and the challenging future. Mr. Wood eulogized the group with an appropriate comment: This is one of the most outstanding classes l have had the privilege of graduating, To etlae . . . EPHEBIANS. The smartest, the sharpest, the keenest, the best: we'll show you that our group leads all the rest - The Argents have shown their talent for leadership in many fields. Members of our class have been winning officers, trophies, scholarships, awards, and doing our all around best to bring fame and recognition to the brickpile. Ylveaprade With the alertness and enthusiasm of 150 young girls, plus the talented leadership of Mrs. Genevieve Weide and Miss Carolyn Mitchill, Fremont's l948 Drill Team developed into one of the most publicized and proudly exhibited groups in the school's history. To the traditional scrap book that contains the records and reports of each team have been added details of night performances at Wrigley Field and televised drills. Still other proudly pasted-in clippings describe the half-time exhibition during the All-City play-offs at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Where no previous Fremont Drill Team has had the opportunity to march. The white-shoed group prepared intricate marches to such favorites as the St. Louis Blues March, Conquest, Iingle Bells, and - their most difficult and popular drill - When Iohnny Comes Marching Home. Crosses, fans, Wagon Wheels, and a Christmas star were among the patterns formed by the cardinal-and gray-clad girls to the audible delight of the spectators. Mrs. Weide beamed as she proudly made this comment, The girls made their team a champion of all drill teams because they were Willing to forget 'self' and remember 'team' and because they could keep their good humor after long hours of strenuous drilling and strict discipline. With a team consisting of such talented players as honey-handed Captain Tom Brown, All-City Frank Padilla and LeRoy Fairman, and South- ern League Player-of-the-Year Ben Chili-Bean Avila, coached under the expert hand of Harry Edelson, the Pathfinders found the road to the city championship crown. First mark on the path to success was made when the torrid Fremont eleven blasted last year's City Champs, Washington, into oblivion with a 40-0 victory. Scoring twice within the first three minutes of the game, Padilla made the initial play to complete a 31-yard jaunt. This was followed quickly by a plunge-throughcenter by fullback Lamar Patton to make the second notch on the touchdown belt. In the next period Abel Armas re- covered a fumble that set left half Dick Forbes up for his trip to the land of milk and honey. Shortly afterwards, substitute half-back Dick Turnblade rocketed 65 yards to payy dirt., In, the second half an 85-yard run-back by Padilla was nullified by a clipping penalty. This just delayed the fifth set oi points by a mere eight plays, as Turnblade scooted 23 yards to break the way for Forbes' landing. George Carpenter, fullback, ended the Generals' misery with the final tally after intercepting one of Chuck Reeves' aerials and dashing 30 yards to oil soil. It was a short glory for the Boys from San Pedro Street, for the following week the Manual Toilers gave the Road Detectors a bad bump by holding them to a 0-0 deadlock. - lefferson proved a much less stubborn foe, as Fremont overpowered the Democrats 20-6. With second stringers Glen Allen and Dick Turnblade doing most of the ground covering, the first points were made by Brown on a quarterback sneak. In the next quarter or 40-yard Brown-to-Galasso pass set Patton up for his dash to touchdown territory. Fremontians felt the hot tongue of competition in the last period as running threat Maurice Hill found his way across the line. The crowd soon settled back in their seats, however, when Turnblade intercepted an aerial and Patton fought his way over to the following play, with Brown making the final conversion. Power, plus an alert pass defense counted for the 34-7 triumph over the Los Angeles Romans. The first minutes of the game saw an even ex- change of points with Patton plowing over from the two and Brown converting, followed by a Nelson-to-Haddad pass that clicked with Nelson converting for L.A.'s only tally of the game. Fear of a repeat of the Manual deadlock filled the Red Raiders with excess energy, and in the second period Flashy Frank Padilla rambled 40 yards to pave the way for the following T.D. The next points came as sub-quarterback Mickey McBride intercepted a spiral and traveled 25 yards to make the going easy for a Brown-to-Allen pay-off pass. Ben showed his All-City caliber as he intercepted a Roman ball, and twelve plays later Willy Willmore, right half, tallied. In the final quarter Coach Edelson's boys covered 45 yards in eight plays with left half Nishon Karamardian making the closing points on a three yard buck. With the loop crown looming larger after Manual's debacle at the hands of Iefferson, the Scouts excelled over the Roosevelt Teddies, Z1-0. The initial play was made by center Abel Armas as he intercepted a Roosevelt spiral and went 70 yards to pay dirt. The second set of points was added by All-City Padilla as he scooted 14 yards to a T.D. Third string fullback Iohn Wilson ended the day with a plunge through center. The Milk Bowl found the Cards making their share of points against the Hamilton Yanks, but to no avail, for the North conquered the South 33-21. ' In what was anything but a pushover, It the Road Detectors humbled Garfield 9-6 in the city semis, lt took most of the tirst quarter tor Fremont to get down to the Bulldog nine, which seemed temporarily to be their Waterloo. The 26-yard boot was good and the Red Raiders led, 3-0. Two quarters later Tom Brown completed a SU-yard jaunt by circling end for the Pathfinders' final marks. The game Wasn't over as far as Garfield was concerned, however, as they recovered a Brown fumble and traveled 30 yards in four plays for their first and only points. Over nine thousand spectators viewed Fremont's final triumph in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, as they stepped over Gardena 17-6 to ascend the city throne. The game, which was a matter of power over speed, was a U-U deadlock until the fourth quarter, when a lucky intercep- tion by Glenn Allen, who side-stepped and straight-armed his way 60 yards down the field, ignited the Cards into flaming action. Seven plays later Brown carried the pigskin over on a quarterback sneak. Within a few minutes, McBride intercepted, and five plays later Zaby applied his talented toe to the inflated bladder for a 33-yard field goal. ln the next eleven plays the Scouts rambled 62 yards and Brown covered the needed 18 yards on an end-around play to the end-zone. Gardena, faced by the third and fourth strings, managed to cover 94 yards in five plays, where a Bahrman-to-Butler pass clicked for the closing tally of the game and the season. Coach, Ervin Tanner, 4 I 1 I I I I Launching a semi successful season with a smashing 27 O victory over Washington, the Fremont Bees looked like last year's undefeated all-city squad to Coach Ervin Tanner. Sparked by the brilliant passing of lim Brown, and the speed of fleet-footed half-backs Frank Rodriguez and Paul Blankenship, the babes seemed to be in tip-top shape as they hit the winning pay-dirt again and again in practice tilts and in the first game of the season. Highlight of the Washington event was a 45-yard run to tally territory by mighty midget Clarence Hoeffer. Other points were added up by Draper and Blankenship. At this point, fate seemed to turn against the Cards, and despite such hard-working linesmen as Dick Pawloski, Dwight Sawyer and lim Worden the following game was dropped to the Toilers by the lack of a conversion, with the scoreboard reading 7-6. The Scouts' only TD. was run over by Paul Blankenship after a 25-yard Brown-to-Rodriguez pass. Again defeat lurked in the path of the Road Detectors as they succumbed to Iefferson, l3-6. Pathtinders' score was made by a 30-yard aerial from Brown to Hines. Long runs by Scott, Blankenship and Rodriguez, plus the excellent defense playing of George Rickard, Bill Hepner and Harry Foster, made it a happy day for the little men as they romped over LA., 6-U. Elation was punctured at the Roosevelt game, though, when even such key players as Bill Partridge failed to buck the Teddies' line. The affair was dropped 6-U, ending the Southern Loop with 2 wins and 3 losses on the tally books of the Tannerites. Under the guidance of their new coach Edwin Wise, the Pathfinders scored their first basketball victory in 17 games. The event was a 32-30 defeat of the South Gate Ramblers with Leo Fang and Bill Moreno taking the high point honors. However, no sooner did the victory flag begin to Wave than it had to be hauled down as the Scouts bowed to Bell, 33-38. The Bell boys added up their win- ning points against the brickpile's second and third strings, as all but one of the first men were benching it out With the top lads again in the game the Road Detectors felled lordon 41-25, and Riis, 39-24, in the same week, Gene Clear and Sam Lawmaster accounted for most of the baskets. nan!! ra ,, J The gun which ended their first league tilt with the Los Angeles Romans found the L.A. boys ahead, 38-33. With al- most no support from the student body, Fremont had a bad luck streak, dropping a game to lefferson 27-53, and one to Manual Arts 26-53. Despite desparate attempts by Leo Fang, who managed to bucket 23 points, the Cards lost to the heavily favored Washington Generals, 41-66. The story was the same as Fremont was defeated by Roosevelt, 44-38. The team showed much improvement, however, and with Les Stark playing an especially. peppy game they were subdued by Manual Arts by a mere 34-40. Gene Clear managed to account for 19 digits and a 56-47 victory over LA. the following week. This happened to be the first league game that the Pathfinders could claim in two years, However, again the Washington duo of Don Eby and Chet Noe proved too much for the San Pedro Street boys and they heard the sigh of defeat to the tune of 66-41, The season ended with a final polishing by Roosevelt, SU-43, with Bill Moreno taking the honors. l:'remont's one game in the city basketball tournament did little more than place Leo Fang on the All-Southern team as they lost by one point in the final moment of play. 5? Grover, Hunter, Knowles, Kulonis, Lacher, Lopez, Martinez, Mendez, Molina, Molle, New, Salcido, Silva, Tadych, Valenzuela. Coach, Mr. Edwin Wise. Hoping for another city championship, the Bee basketball team, under the guiding hand of Coach Edwin Wise, started off their season by tromping over the South Gate Ramblers, 28-20. With Richard Tadych and Eddie Martinez doing most of the point making, the lads went on to trounce thoroughly the Bell Eagles, 26-l5, and Iordon High, 28-40. Nor was this the end of their lucky streakg a few days later, with a 10th grader, Ray Goodman, stealing the starring honors, the babes beat the Riis Vikings by a close 28-23. The first league tussle with the L.A. Romans was indeed a thriller as Rich Tadych made the tying points in the last moment of play, closely followed by a lucky Martinez shot, that gave the Pathfinders the winning edge, 43-41. Iefferson, however, proved a mite too strong for the midgets, and they dropped their first game to the Democrats, 38-27. The following tilt was an even sadder affair as Garcia of Manual outplayed the Cards, 61-27. It was again Eddie Martinez who saved the Path- finders' wagon, as he placed two long, push shots through the hoops in the closing seconds of the Wash- ington game to give the Fremontians a triumphant 37-35 victory. Ray Goodman stole the spotlight by chalking up twelve digits against Roosevelt. However, it was of little avail, as the Roughriders walked off with the game by a mere two points, 35-37, The story was exactly the same in the return bout against Manual Arts, with the Toilers finding themselves on the right side of a 34-36 score. Two points seemed to be the hex of the Road Detectors as they lost by the now luckless score, 37-35, to Los Angeles High. Despite despairing attempts by Eddie Martinez and Ray Good- man the babes again felt the sting of defeat from Ieff, 40-37. The lads did much better than their big brothers in the basketball tournament and thanks to high point man Mike Kiki Cafarchia, they managed to end up on the right side of a 39-35 tilt with San Fernando, and an amazing 42-20 dual with the San Pedro Pirates to end their semi-successful season. Faced with high hopes of a championship team, the tennis squad, coached by Mr. Bill Haney, downed South Gate 7-U, Bell 6-l, and Huntington Park 6-2. Following the path set by the football, track, baseball, and gymnastic clubs, the raclcetrnen forced the badly humbled Washington Generals to bow once again to the Pathfinder axe, 5-2. Match of the meet was the Eddie Martin versus Leroy Nelson affair, with Eddie winning the first and third sets. This was the first time in three years of competition that Martin had been able to defeat Nelson. Others swinging their way to victory were Ierry Teesdale and the double combinations of Wong and Yonders and Cox and Herse. However, thoughts of the Southern Crown were tossed aside as Fremont lost in rapid suc- cession to Roosevelt and Los Angeles, leaving the Pathfinders with Eddie Martin, who has lost only six times in three years, as their final hope for a berth in the Southern Loop. bou6le trou6le . . . i :Lid 45 'SVVQ y 46,6 GLY. The following week the lads met their first and only defeat of the season as they fell to the merciless leffersonites, 92112 to lllfg, The thinclads soon showed the public that this was not their season to lose, however, as the following week they captured all of the running events for the first time in the school's history. A surprised L.A. watched the Road Detectors whiz by, 66112 to 37172. Eddie Garo, high hurdle man, set his best time of the year at l5.4. Maynard Gentry, whose running ability has been winning much attention, set his newest time at 52.8 for the quarter-mile. foe Ruggles took the mile in a new speed of 4.51, Fanny Scala and George Hines tied for second in the pole vault, and Sid Langley heaved the shot to his all- time best of 47 feet, closely followed by Tom Zaby and Erv Fiihr. It was much the same tale as the Roughriders of Roosevelt were downed 54 to 47. With foe Huggies taking the mile and foe Day and lim Leonard nearly tying each other with a 10.2 in the hundred, the Pathfinders left the Teddies sadly defeated. The Ieffersonites having taken their deserved honors, the Path- finders gathered up I9 points in the All-Southern finals. loe Day whizzed in with a third in the hundred closely followed by lim Leonard, who also took a fifth in the 220. LeRoy Fairman and Maynard Gentry pulled a quick third and fourth in the 220 and Lil Woods and LeRoy Poulin came in fifth in the mile to end the League season. Many wins and a few losses were in store for the Bee and Cee track squads, directed by Coach Erwin Tanner, as they launched their sea- son with an unexpected victory over the Hunting- ton Park Spartans. The story was much the same for the Bees, who, not being able to surpass lefferson and Roosevelt, took a cool third in their league. Much of the point-rnak- ing was done by track- sters Maltby, Brown, and Blackburn, hurdle run- ners Kulonis and Corn- forth, and pole vaulter Buford, who managed an even ll feet before the season ended. By showing their top talent and ability the lads managed to perform what the Los Angeles metropolitan papers deemed an impossibility, and literally walked over the Washington Generals, 67-52. All-Southern high bar man, Iohnny Veneris, placed in free-X, parallels, rings, and high bar, to account for 24 points, Hector Rivera twho placed a happy third in a previous match with Venice's unbeatable Parryl and Bob Dalhover took point-making honors tor Fremont on the rope-climb, Danny Wells, A-ll, whose grace and form on the free-X floor has won him much acclaim throughout the city, added another five points to the growing score. The high bar seemed to be the breaking point for the Generals as Don Dalhover took first, followed by Iohnny Veneris, Dautis Waterman, and Louis Gonzales, B-l0 pride of the apprentice men. Dick Crosby, another placer in the Southern event, got the winner's nod for his side horse exercises, Senior Kaye Fletcher, the only Pathfinder to place in the State AAU. meet, and who is rated among the finest of tumblers to compete for the Brickpile, was winner of the tumbling tiff and nosed out All-Southern Adolph Palma on the long horse. Thanks to such talented players as Red Travis, who led the club with an even .300 batting average, Frank Bates, with a .295 average, and lack Bradley, who holds run-making honors, the lads managed to win their last three games of the season, as Washington, co-contender for the title, dropped two. Outstanding game of the season was the 5 to 3 triumph over the Generals, who Were seeking to clinch the title with a verdict in the contest. With Sam Lawmaster pitching, Masil Pettit doing second base honors, and Earl Salcido making the Winning hit, Washington re- ceived a swift change of mind. . When the Fremontian went to press it was being opined that Les Haserot's charges were the co-favorites to cop the Dorsy Tourney. tv the 6411 game That good things come in little packages was cer- tainly proven true to the Pathfinders as the Tenth grade baseball team walked home with the League crown! After tying their first game with Banning, Coach Ted Coffman's mighty midgets went on to trounce other chal- lenging opponents. With Don Hanggie doing the catching and much of the batting, and Don Watson and Ollie Walkup sharing pitching honors the lads sank Bell, Nar- bonne, Frankin, and Hamilton in rapid succession. With Fragosoo Berardino, and Walters adding up most of the points, Iefferson made a quick exit from the compe- tition, l9-2. Los Angeles and Venice met the same fate, both chalking up no runs against the now incomparable Fremont nine. After whipping Huntington Park 6-U, the lads met and defeated the final contenders for the Crown. Dorsey proved a stubborn foe as the Road Detectors batted away a 6-2 ball game to end the season and add another mark to the already long list of Pathfinder victories. 10th GRADE BASEBALL TEAM: Leonard Berardino, Ierry Berg, Stuart Bernstein, Gordon Bray, Frank Clatanoff, Bob Davis, lim Everett, Daniel Fernandez, limrny Fragoso, Bruce Furtado, Stanley Garris, Luis Guerrero, Don Hang- gie, Lawrence Hester, Bill Hobbs, Bill Iones, lim Part- ridge, Ioe Partridge, Iames Phillips, George Stewart, Erine Sugar, Iack Valentine, Ollie Walkup, Ieffrey Walsh, Bill Walter, Don Watson.
