Page One GUEGHAMPS Starting aut with high hopes, Coach George Dirckx led his charges to a rather fair season by winning the Southern League Pennant and being awarded a tie with Los Angeles High School far the City title O lncidentally this is Dirckx' last yeor as the head football coach at Fremont Q Coach Don Handy will take over his iob next season while Dirckx will coach the bockfield Q At the start of the season the Pathfinders continued their losing streak left over from last year by dropping three straight practice games I The first tussle was with the Loyola Cubs I Although the Cubs were outweighed I5 pounds ta the man, they were continually outcharging the massive Pathfinders, as their halfback, Ned Mat- thews, led them to a l3-0 triumph I The second en- gagement was with Long Beach Poly Q Again the Path- finders were badly outplayed as the lockrabbits ran wild leading the Pathfinclers to a Z0-6 victory Q Manual starred for the victors, by scoring two of the three touch- downs, one on a 77-yard kick return Q However, the Pathfinders showed improvement over the week before, despite the lower score Q In the third practice game, with Roosevelt, although Fremont was beaten 7-0, the Trailblazers finally showed some of the power they were supposed to possess O Twice the Pothfinders were with- in Roasevelt's lO-yard line, but were unable to capital- ize an their efforts Q At last Fremont's theoretical power became a reality in the first league game with Poly Q The Trailblazers blazed their way to three touchdowns to win, I9-0, at the some time holding back the Parrots' offense O The Poly defense was sup- posed to hold Fremont's efforts to score, but they were helpless against All-City Bleeker, Eddie Hartunlon, and Davie Davis, even with a nine-man line I Jefferson came next with Max Tafoya, whom they were grooming for All-City honors I Though he was the spark of the Democrats' lone touchdown, Mel Bleeker, who played opposite him, showed a much better brand of ball by leading the Pathfinders to a 20-0 victory Q Manual Arts had a 20-game winning streak bmken 6-O in the big game of the year I For two years Manual Arts had been undefeated since the Pathfinders beat them 7-0 in l935 O After this important Manual contest, Wash- ington seemed easy, as they were defeated 25-0, and then Huntington Park becarne prey to the Pathfinder: as they went under l9-O Q The final game, a re-match with Roosevelt, was really a hearthreaker, as the Rough- riders come back in Frank Merriwell fashion from a l2-point deficit to win l3-l2 Q However, a month later Roosevelt was found to have had two ineligibles playing, and the game was ruled out Q The P,-T.A. Carnival sow Fremont march 75 yards in l5 plays ta score a touchdown and place the South in the lead I HOWBVH.
