ln only their first season, the Cougar Soccer team reached the playoffs. finishing the season with a 6-2-1 record and placed second to Venice, who went on to share the city title with San Pedro. Coach Dave Court and his team were undefeated in pre-season and met Hollywood in the league opener. Goalie Craig Shelton led the Cougar squad to a 2-O victory. with Sophomore Rich Durban and Junior Pete Kara contributing the goals. The next game was a brutal match against Venice. who came out ahead. 2- 1. Rich Durban scored the only Cougar goal. The defense, led by Goalie Marc Pedrick, and fullbacks Jeff Sumpter and Jack Richards then shut-out Palisades. 2-O. Pete Kara scored his second goal and Rich Durban his third. The Cougars returned to Kennedy to meet Poly in a closely played match which the brown and gold won, 2-1. Senior Phil Norris scored the first goal and Rich Durban scored his fourth goal in as many games. Hollywood again posed no real problem as the Cougars won, 2-1. Jeff Sumpter. assisted by Greg Catton, scored on a head shot for the first goal and Rick Jusko contributed the game winning goal. The Cougars fought hard against Venice but couldn't score as Venice won. 3-0. This didn't hold Kennedy down as they bounced back to beat Palisades again, 2- 1, with goals by Pete Kara and Tommy George. A tight defense led by Mike Stockey and Kevin Kerylow allowed Palisades only one goal. The Cougars then tied Poly, 1-1, with Pete Kara scoring the lone goal for Kennedy. In the last game of the regular season, the Cougars beat University High, 1-0, Rich Durban getting his fifth goal of the season. Craig Shelton played outstanding in goal, saving a penalty kick. Kennedy entered the playoffs facing Roosevelt, the third highest scoring team in the city. What started as a closely played scoreless soccer game turned into defeat for the Cougars as Roosevelt scored late in the fourth quarter. But the Kennedy team didn't give up as Rick Jusko scored a spectacular goal with only five seconds remaining. ln overtime, Roosevelt scored two quick goals to win, 3-1. 149
