CCDLJNTRY ADAM MESSER PAUL WOODS . .tu-we f ,,ff aweeetes- xw 1t1v:ew. .mem tyvftmmmtsuysmmw 1 Building a winning tradition and maintaining it is a goal that all teams strive for but only the very best accomplish. Here at Kennedy the Cross Country team has reached and surpassed this goal with flying colors. Now whenever there is a discussion as to the best distance teams in the city. Kennedy is mentioned right along with the other powerhouses such as University. Palisades, and Taft. Some teams just couldn't handle the upgraded competition caused by the switch into the Mid-Valley League but the Golden Cougar teams turned in their most successful season by recording an almost flawless 20-1 dual meet record. They grabbed three team championships in the league meet and had three league champions along with qualifying all three teams for the city finals. Starting the season as favorites to win the M.V. L., the Cougars left no skeptics as they virtually ran over Taft and Reseda before even opening their regular season. The regular season opened with the Cougars capsizing the Viking ships from Monroe. More came when the Harriers swept Van Nuys, Birmingham. and Granada Hills. Then presenting the Varsity team their only loss of the season was San Fernando. But even with the loss, Robert Traba set a new tenth grade record of 10:24. Highlights of the season came from eleventh grade Varsity runner Tom Babiracki when he lowered his record three times during the season, finally ending up with a best of 10:11. But even more devastating were the improvements from the team's only two girl harriers, Michele Singleton and RandyThompson. ' After the M.V. L. finals the legmen again faced the task of qualifying for the City finals. On December 14 the Kennedy Cross Country team climaxed their most successful season. A standout performance was turned in by Geroge Sherman in the J.V. race as he captured a fifth place trophy. Out of the 49 schools in the city, Kennedy's Varsity placed eighth, J.V.'s ninth, and the tenth grade team tenth. A great year to look back on as the team prepares for next year.
