Huanmjohnson Cordova Burbank 5acran1ento Highlands Hogan Grant 222 Varshy BasketbaH The Mighty For the fifth consecutive year the Varsity Cougars have been a Metro League dominating team and a T.O.C. contender, under the guidance of Coach Jim Spider Thomas. The Cougars ended the season with an overall record of 2l-IO, ranking them seventh for the majority of the season. Placing first in the Woodland Invitational Tournament, Kennedy was led by tournament MVP John Black, and all tournament team selections LaVeIl Clay, Ron Williams, Eddie Johnson, and Jomo Nash. Lacking height, Kennedy relied on quickness and proven ability. Leading the team in scoring was 6 6 center Ron Williams, averaging I5 per game, and grabbing I3 rebounds. Penetrating in on the offensive attack were forwards LaVeIl Clay and Jomo Nash, each contributing I3 and IO points per game respectively. On the perimeter of the court were John Black and Eddie Johnson, providing effective ball handling and key defensive plays. Fellow starter Howard Cole added offensive strength as well as superiority to the Cougar onslaught. At the season's end the Cougars exceeded most peopIe's expectations by beating top ranked Highlands and advancing into the semifinals of the T.O.C. With many returning players and a fine J.V. team, Kennedy has a season to look forward to next year. Congratulations team on a great season!

The cougars finished second in the La Salle Christmas Basketball Tournament behind the play of team leaders, Sean Bell, Steve Fields and Daryl Jackson. Other J.V. stand-outs included, Matt Powell. Dwayne Perry, Carl Rein- hold and Steve Harris. But perhaps the biggest star of the season was 6 2 center Cleo Reed, the only freshman on the squad. Cleo came off the bench and scored more points than anyone else on the team. We are sure the team will have another great season next yearl 63 66 63 69 69 J.V.
