Finland lsn't Finnished Without Petri No heissanl I was very excited when I came to California last August. I was going to spend a year in the United States and I would have to manage with, what to me, is a foreign language. I came here to live with an American family and to attend a high school. My reason for coming was not only to take a vacation from Finland, though. Coming to school here has been one of the most enjoyable experiences for me. One reason is that it is so different from the schools I have attended in Finland. Kennedy High School has more clubs and other kinds of activities, than our Finnish schools have. Becoming an exchange student was a big step in my life. It was the first time I would spend a long time away from home. I came here to learn the American way of life, something much different from Finland. I shall always remember, with pleasure, my teachers, friends, and all the others who helped make this year such a happy time. Finally, I shall remember my host family, the Beskeens, who have been all that I could hope for. PETRI KUURMA me Uhr. I94 AFS Club Foreign Affair Imagine yourself being swept away by tropical breezes as you savour Brazilian sunshine. How about surfing in New Zealand? Or being caught up in the New York nightlife? You may even be whisked away into the island paradise of Sardinia. All of these fantasies are possible thanks to AFS. AFS is an organization dedicated to bringing different countries together by exchanging students from these counties. This year the AFS club was off to a promising start. ln September there was an AFS workshop at Sierra College. lt offered a unique opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and experiences with other AFS students throughout California. There have also been many fund raisers to help finance the money needed for exchanges. If you're the kind of person with a taste for excitement and adventure, AFS may be for you. The experience gained and the friendships made through such an opportunity last a lifetime. Row I: Andrea Din, Julio Martin, Myriam De Souza, Karen Sasamoto, Laura Chun, Lisa Bayley. Hola a todos, When I applied to be a foreign exchange student, I never dreamed that I would end up in such a nice city as Sacramento, and in a school as good as Kennedy. I have had an unforgettable experience that has changed my life in so many aspects. I recommend this to anyone who wishes to find new experiences in life. You have to be strong to spend a year without your family. At this point your host family plays an important part in your year abroad. They treat you like part of their family also they make the year an enjoyable experience. The first month living in the U.S. was a little difficult to adjust. Their were changes, but after awhile you get used to hamburgers, hot dogs. and Monday Night Football. You begin to understand the American life style. I want to thank all the Kennedy students and my host family, the Moore's, for making this wonderful year possible. I hope I will be fortunate enough to come back. Gracias a todos, Julio Martin A.F.S., Spain iss AFS student QM' Gle for Julio
