Cars were not immune to JFK ' s trend setting style. KLOS rainbow stickers featuring a favorite rock group seemed to appear throughout the Irish parking lot. As we listened to our radio, the station KROQ could be heard blasting out the Stray Cats. Everyone scrambled to the exit, careful to obey the 5 mph speed limit. Carloads of stu- dents cruised to their homes and popular hangouts. x t ac ft -die u)eH -tKe 4w tas Like Totally  bte. ,TTM PAVff v | V „o G ' c o s Cute, tall, petite, intrigu- ing, attractive, win- ning, charming, fetch- ing, engaging, marvelous, amazing, extraordinary, viva- cious, animated, dashing, dynamic. These are some of the thousands of adjectives describ- ing the individuals on the Ken- nedy campus. Each one of these people, from the spritely under- classmen to the classy seniors, contributed their share, creating a distinct personality to JFK and the Fighting Irish. k c- 7 £ ; r o 10 Guys dolls X eculiar antics abounded on the stroke of twelve. Kennedy ' s rambunctious cliques set serious- ness aside, if only for awhile. Without the aid of special effects, supermen flew past towering lockers and onward to class. Grapes and cans bounced out of lunch bags and into action as imaginations exploded. No matter what the situation leave it to the Fighting Irish to make the most sane moment into the cr aziest. Ckood . 006 lucV riend- -foreoer 12 Lights are Whether it was the way to school, home, football games, or other social events, people on the Kennedy campus were constantly trying to find the fastest route. With ease and rapidity, the in- dustrious Irish calculated the quickest and the shortest distance between two points. Almost ev- ery student discovered that the most practical way was walking otherwise known as the agony of de-feet. Others possessed more exhilarating means. An endless array of bikes, mopeds, motorcy- cles, and scooters filled the cam- pus. Many students realized the best type of transportation was driving. Fixed up cars and souped up VW ' s displayed the talent of the proud owner. Whether by pedal power, people power, or horsepower, Kennedy was def- initely built for speed. 14 Built tor Speed IU, Ah, yes — campus life — not those misty water-colored memo- ries that Barbara Streisand sang about — but fast times at Ken- nedy High. Remember rushing to the Media Center hoping to cram for a physics test — only to find Mr. Schreur by his Sorry filled up sign. Of course, how could the fun and recreation of P.E. be forgotten? At times, opening the infamous street locker turned out to be a job for two — each trying their best to recall the elusive combination. The Garden this phrase struck terror in the hearts and put soil on the hands of so many biology students. How could we ever give up these humorous yet wonderful high school memo- ripe: ' ? 4 « rui 16 Candid Campus 6g«M4pe Seniors. There is nothing like knowing that only one year, a mere two semesters or four quarters, remains. To the class of 1983, the final year beckoned great feelings of expectancy, ex- citement, and even a mixture of regret. The senior year was a time to appreciate the moments of relaxing and socializing with buddies in the Senior Circle, and cheering and chanting, hooting and hollering at the assemblies. The pressures of graduation included applying to colleges, taking requirement tests, and maintaining that G.P.A. While the seniors wished the good times, the dances, the football games, and the assemblies, would go on and on, they anticipated the challenges of life after gradua- tion. 18 Get Up Go It ' s Everything But Partytime This is the place for celebrating This is the crowd that ' s facinating This is the time for concentrating to hear some words worth translating by The Go-Go ' s With only a thimbleful of rambunctious staff members, the Eternal Flame diligently toiled on creating a traditional, yet original annual. With the help and the use of so-called imaginations, vivacious Elliot Schnek, and serious editor June Oyama, the staff succeeded in completing all the hectic deadlines. Despite the overwhelming and endless strives and struggles for uniqueness, the Eternal Flame kept their sanities. With high spirits and hard work. A memorable book was produced for the entire student body. Photographs: 1. Lucy and Ricky write new lyrics to Babaloo. 2. Freeze frame. 3. Dare to be different t he Irish campus | went through I ' some terrific changes this year. With student council ' s motto, Dare to Be Different they did just that! Their main concern was upgrading activities for everyone at Kennedy. While keeping up the traditional Spirit and Irish Weeks, class competitions, and peppy assemblies, council improved the noon time activities and made the school dances even more exciting by obtaining disc jockeys who appeal to the majority of the student body. All of this was planned in a valiant effort to uphold the traditional Fighting Irish spirit. Photographs: 1. Ron Rabune and Debbie Gast give mixed reviews. 2. Mr. C. 3. Student Council 23 Bringing the news and much more 2ed by Lori Hill, editor in chief, and Mr. C, the advisor, the Shamrock staff succeeded in keeping the student body informed. They put together a monthly paper with feature articles, editorials and photos. The Shamrock highlighted the morning announcements with appeals for letter to the editor. These requests served two purposes; securing letters and tripping the speaker with tongue twisters. The Shamrock exposed readers to a world of knowledge and prepared the audience for the world to be entered after high school. Photographs: 1. The many faces creating the Shamrock. 2. Kennedy Shamrock Regiment burst forth on the winning scene. Their performances fascinated audiences everywhere, from our local halftime shows to the international Limerick parade in Ireland. Leading the band to its many victories were parade drum major Steve Dekany and field drum major Mark Lush. The many victories included the Artesia parade where the regiment won 1st place, the Western, the Westminister and the Mount Carmel Tournaments in which 2nd places were earned, the Los Altos competition where the superior Overall effects award was won and to climax the season, the ;do parade where the two most illiustrious awards, Sweepstakes and Spirit, were captured. With sharp and precise moves, these girls kicked, marched, and danced their way to top awards. These honors included 1st placings, 2nd placings, and Specialty and Sweepstakes awards. As well as performing in an array of parades, assemblies and field shows, the drill team also presented various routines in the Miss Drill Team USA the annual Spring Show and the traditional trip to Ireland. V A PRECIOUS TIME appiness was only a moment away . . . and tension had mounted as the announcement for the Homecoming Queen was about to be made. On October 22, a Friday evening with the Kennedy Fighting Irish playing host to the Pacifica Mariners, the stage was set for a memorable night for Homecoming. Tears and cheers engulfed Handel Stadium as Mari Chekel was named Homecoming Queen. The returning Queen Kim R. Brown exchanged her dozen roses for the half dozen Mari was carrying. The sound of the band playing, Can ' t Help Falling in Love with You, could be heard as the traditional crown and cape were bestowed upon Mari. These were hers to cherish for this precious moment. During the preceding week, an extensive election pro- cess was held in which the Fighting Irish chose the Queen and her court. Escorted by their fathers, the Homecoming Court was composed of Queen Mari Chekel, Senior Prin- cesses Debbie Astle and Jennifer Crawford, Junior Princess Darla Hostetter, Sophomore Princess Sharon Atherton, and Freshmen Princess Kelly Walsh. Yesterday is already a dream. Tomorrow is only a vision. A dream of happiness with every tomorrow ... a vision of hope . . . precious days . . . precious years ... in a precious time. A Precious Time 33 Set for action rj I ith the i sound of a K whistle and the onset of the music, the colorguard was off to an award-winning year. Colorful flags blurred as they were twirled and breaths were held as the rifles were thrown high into the air. These poetic elements captivated audiences and judges. The colorguard won numerous awards at such prestigious competitions as Artesia, Silverado, and Chino parades and field competitions. The outstanding group was lead by Peggy Milwilki (advisor), Chris Ebell (flag leader), Sandv Lyons (colorguard leader), and Jackie Perryman (rifle leader). These individuals protected their unique moves and military sharpness until perfection was attained. 34 Colorguard J emac e +e. 5510.0 ooe s ed Vu nd ' b ooi sh we could fo?5j6 -vcn some classy ioge er tVns eac pnaybe nev+v r Voce • o see fc r VVie summer 6co i w h r r ea ki corvx? fcS xren Jkorvfoh •fi 1 -, I 7 Photographs: 1. I can still remember the times when we couldn ' t wait until we graduated and could leave school. This graduation business sure sneaks up on you. Every year I get my yearbook back, and it ' s filled with, have a nice summer. Now it ' s, have a nice life. I wonder if I ' m really ready to go out and face the insanity of being an adult. Either way, I know the experiences I have learned at Kennedy will stay with me the rest of my life. During my sophomore year, I was very active as Soph- omore Treasurer and also as a member of the Sophomore Basketball Team. In my junior year I played J. V. Basket- ball and I had the honor of being selected as a member of the Emerald Chain. As a senior, I have been elected to the positions of I.O.C. President and of C.S.F. Vice-President. I was also honored as being selected as Kennedy ' s representative for the Gemco Economic Scholarship. Aside from these activities, I have not forgotten about the books. Throughout high school, I have maintained a 3.89 G. P. A. I would like to thank the faculty and my family for all their help and support throughout high school. Most of all, I would like to thank all of my friends for all the great times we ' ve had. You have all made these three years the best of my life. 42 Mr. and Miss Irish Mari Chekel Getting involved was a decision I made in order to grow as a person, through the experiences and responsi- bilities of High School activities. As a senior I have real- ized that school involvement has been one of my smart- est decisions. Kidnapped for being selected a member of the sopho- more cheer squad, was the first unforgetable memory I have from Kennedy. Also, as a sophomore, I was an active member in the Sophomore House of Representa- tives. A highlight in my junior year was making the Varsity Songleading Squad. I love to dance, so of course, being a member of the Performing Dance was very enjoyable. Student Leadership also became a big part of my junior year. I was elected Junior Class Secretary and was a part of the Junior House of Representatives. In my final, and best year at Kennedy, I was selected as head songleader, performing dance leader, and was a member of Student Council. With effort and guidance I have maintained a 3.2 G.P.A. A very special memory of my senior year was representing my school as Home- coming Queen. It ' s an honor that I will never forget. Through all the time and effort I have given to Ken- nedy, I have received special friends and memories in return. Luv you MD Seniors 85 £ V mM Although we started the season with 23 returning lettermen, we had very few experienced players. In the pre-season polls, this team was picked to finish in the lower division of the Empire League. Through determination and dedication these thirty-eight players provided our fans with one of the most exciting seasons in many a year. Their second place finish in the Empire League and entrance into the C.I.F. play-offs was a tribute to their pride and togetherness as a team. Our first league game with Los Alamitos ended up in a disappointing tie, 21-21. The Loara Saxons played a very tough game but the Fighting Irish pulled out our first win of the season, 14-6 with a last minute drive for the winning touchdown. We put up a good fight for the first half, but eventually the Empire League cham- pions, Esperanza, beat us 49-18. Our homecoming game against Pacifica High School was our best game of the year. In a very exciting and explosive game, we won 42-28. A strong defensive effort and an explo- sive offense provided us with our third win of the year against El Dorado 18-6. A cliff-hanger with Cypress resulted in a 14-6 win over our cross- town rival. In our final game of the year we defeated one of the pre-season favorites to win the championship. With a final eighty-seven yard drive, we scored a 27-24 win over a very strong Katella team. Since we finished in second place with a 4-1-1 record, we entered the C.I.F. playoffs to play the third place team from the Cen- tury League, Santa Ana. Mistakes in our kicking game and turnovers offensively re- sulted in a 23-13 loss to this fast team from Santa Ana. The ability to never quit in a game was one of the fine characteristics of this team. In the majority of our games we were phy- sically out-manned, but we had a greater fighting spirit which enabled us to have a very successful year. My thanks to the seniors who provided the leadership to make this such an enjoy- able and positive year. Best of luck in your future endeavors. COACH HANCARTNER : I Determined to Win Photographs: 1. Marina Van Melle was the team ' s most consistent player leading in several offensive categories, while Cheri Sucher was a main- stay at the net where she hammered her opposition with her hard hitting. Because he was hired a few days prior to the beginning of the sea- son, Magdaug had to hurriedly introduce the plan to get the girls in condition to win. In spite of Coach Magdaug ' s excellent in- struction and great strategy, the team lost some heart-breakers to El Dorado and Pacifi- ca. By winning against Pacifica midway into the season, the squad seemed to be on its way to improving last year ' s record. Outstanding players for tennis included senior Georgina Coopey and sophomore Phung Ngo. Playing both singles and dou- bles, Georgina was the most versatile player on the roster. Phung is one of the up and coming members, who will be returning next year. She fought her way up the singles lad- der to earn a permanent spot in varsity. Coach Magdaug spoke highly of the team. The club ' s prupose was to enhance the campus in anvway needed, whether it be in tutoring students, beautifying the campus or aiding in community functions. The club had a successful year; their tireless efforts aided the Irish immensely. Starting off on a roll, the Photo Club was supervised by Mr. Maib. These interested students learned developing and printing of film. Discussions on current photography and field trips provided a more in-depth view on photography. Keeping the school entertained was no small task, but Drama met the challenge. These thespians learned the finer points for acting, and they exercised their abilities in productions and skits. Amongst the elaborate decora- tion, were such historical figures as Queen Elizabeth, Mary Tudor, Sir Thomas Moore, Katharine of Aragon, and literary characters as Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, and Macbeth. The Renaissance Experience was the brain- child of Mrs. Meltebarger. Her senior English Honors devoted infinite hours to attain the authenticity necessary. Re- search papers, committee work, design- ing of family or crests, all aided in the project to create an atmosphere of the past. Costumes were worn and the di- alect was spoken. It would be impossible to list all that was done behind the scenes, but the experience truly work- ed one ' s creative and academic ability to its greatest potential. Photograph;,: 1. What kind of rela- tionship do these staff members have? Golly gee whiz! Someone ' s actually reading the Editor ' s Page. Just to prepare you — this page is somewhere in the realm between a long thank you note and the National In- quirer. For the first time in a good many years, the yearbook adapted a theme, as well as keeping the graphics theme. Chariots of Fin- inspired a classv and elegant book. We also used Chariots visually on the cover and the endsheets. CQ and Time magazines supplied awesome copy and layout ideas. I ' ll begin with our advisor Elliot Schnek. Like E.T., Schnek seemed lost in space (Just kidding). As the staff can confirm, I had the utmost respect for Schnek. I never even raised mv voice at him. His goal was to make the book verv visually (opposed to in Braille) appealing. Despite all our kidding, Schnek hung in there and was the perfect teacher for our insane hunch. (We ' ll be brief, where ' s Christian Dior?). Now to the terrific staff. Nina Rojas — returning senior, she received several lessons from the Eternal Flame School of Slang. Kristy McCoy — (The Blonde) was the poor soul in charge of ads (hang in there Kristy — you can cope!) Debbie Elton — though new to yearbook, had a natural flair, for ideas for jazzv photos and nifty copv (and stick figure drawings) — her pages are some of the best. Kelvin Evans — the only yearbook photographer with enough mentality to do pages as well as take pictures, was editor ' s confidant in some neat inside jokes. (Where ' s the space cadet? Valium trip? Elliot don ' t whine) Tammy Ferraiz — authored the insane and low key humor of the volleyball copy. Rosella Reyes — resident Col- leen (meaning she constantly fund raised) endured all the band pages despite extenuating circumstance, and was the CareUnit counselor for editors suffering from deadline de- pression. Patty Ugliano — could strike terror in any editor ' s heart with her cries for help enjoyed yearbook for copy, captions, headline, lavout, donuts, eating Secret Santa clues, and GQ magazines, not in that order (I ' m so mean.). Kurt Wagner — somehow a three year veteran, was constantly busy and whose favorite answer to anv request was no way ( %$ ! Kurt get to work.) Doug Markel — gave up many a lunch to take club shots and act as resident messen- ger. Seniors Marilyn Barrett and Dawn Ethington retired after the first semester. Annette Ugliano — joined this nuttv bunch of bananas at the semester break — witnessing first hand the terror of alphabetizing 400 or so senior statements. Thanks staff — You ' re damn good people. My personal thanks to Camie Ujiie. Her correspondence from Cal saved me from the depths of editoring Hades. Thanks mucho. For all their understanding as I ran up the electricity bill as I burned the midnight oil to meet deadlines — Mom, Pop, Bros, — domo arigato gozaimasu. Editing this book was a heck of a tough job. On all those 4:00 AM and sleepless deadline nights, thank Buddha for Hill Bros, coffee, G.E. lightbulbs, stereo headphone, KROQ, long playing albums (esp. ABC-The Lexicon of Love, Hall Oates — H 2 0, and Police-Ghost in the Machine) betamax videos (Bruce Penhall-Eye on LA), and Extra-Strength Anacin for maintaining my mental health. I sincerely hope that this book knocks the socks off you. I ' ll be the first to admit — it ' s not perfect, but it ' s darn close. As for being editor It ' s a dirtv job, but someone has to doit. Editor-in-chief June Oyama SB PRESIDENT BRYAN GARRITY What are the responsibilities shouldered by an A.S.B. president? How can one person be able to meet the demands of the populace and still remain cheerful under pressure? 1983 — The year that was destined to be different, a year which has literally flown by, but a year that was filled with exciting and special moments, each and everyday. This year ' s Student Coun- cil, definitely one of the best Kennedy has ever had, worked closely together as one unit for the same cause — to upgrade and to continue the high quality traditions and activities of John F. Kennedy High School for the entire student bodv. Together and unselfishly, thev accomplished this goal. To each and every coun- cil member, I want to express my sincere appreciation and thanks! To the students of Kennedy, you were the ones that made the school! Your high class and super spirit made Kennedy shine, whether it be at an athletic event, pep assembly, or any other school sponsored event. I sincerely wish the best to each of you in the future, be sure to use all of your potential which you have displayed here at Kennedy. Make the best of what you are and what you can be. And to Mr. C , a man who has often been overlooked for all his hard work and efforts which he has made to Kennedy, a big thank you. If it wasn ' t for this man, Kennedy High School and the activities and traditions which it holds wouldn ' t be what they are today! Once again thanks to everyone and good luck always. May God Bless each and every one of you.
