Kennedy, the cabin embodies the spirit ofhis beloved New England. Although the cabin lacks traditional portholes, the murals painted on the walls evoke the impression that you are standing on the deck of a wooden galleon centuries ago, surveying the bustling docks of Boston Harbor. As you peruse the room, notice the wood panels and teak decking. A special act of Congress, initiated by Jacqueline Kennedy. declared USS .lohn F. Kennedy the only American warship authorized to use wood. The carpet is a remnant ot' the very carpet that covered the Gval Ohcice during 4 T Kennedys tenure. The bust ol' JFK. sculpted by Felix Der Welden from a special alloy of bronze and brass, radiates a bit of .lFK's charisma. The family donated the sculpture, which was the working model ot' the original artwork displayed in the Kennedy Library in Boston. RearAdmiral tRet.J Earl P Yates, the ship's first commanding officer, painted a compelling portrait of President Kennedy and his daughter, Caroline, which hangs in the cabin. Yates created the likeness of each from two photographs, which are both displayed elsewhere in the cabin. She would ask the captain: 'eHow goes Alexander? If the captain replied. Alexander lives and reigns, then her gracious left side-symbolized by the cornucopia and her bare breastwbestowed good fortune and all the bounty ofthe sea. If the captain failed to answer or answered incorrectly. he received a cold, icy stare from her depraved right side resulting in misfortune, high winds and rough seas, symbolized in her tempestuous robe. Many books are displayed throughout the cabin, some were gifts from the Kennedy family library. Caroline, the ships sponsor, donated and autographed a number of these books, some of which date back to the day she christened the ship: May 27th. l967. J The cabin also contains a painting ofthe ancestral home of the Kennedyls in Ireland, as well as a Waterford crystal Kennedy bowl,-a gift from the people of Ireland. An oil painting of John F. Kennedy Jr., commissioned by Captain Edward J. Fahy, hangs at the entrance to the cabin. When you sit down in one ofthe rocking chairs to relax, envision Camelot, and imagine President Kennedy in the Oval Office sitting in a cane-back rocker identical to these. They were designed specifically for him and became his favorite chairs. They serve to remind us of the high values, the clear vision, and the strong naval traditions embraced by America's thirty-fifth President. When you stand on the deck of the Ship, you stand on a dynamic piece of history, steeped in powerful ideals and proud traditions that are reflected in this i carrierg John F. Kennedy's living legacy.
