Kennedy, the cabin embodies the spirit ofhis beloved New England. Although the cabin lacks traditional portholes, the murals painted on the walls evoke the impression that you are standing on the deck of a wooden galleon centuries ago, surveying the bustling docks of Boston Harbor. As you peruse the room, notice the wood panels and teak decking. A special act of Congress, initiated by Jacqueline Kennedy. declared USS .lohn F. Kennedy the only American warship authorized to use wood. The carpet is a remnant ot' the very carpet that covered the Gval Ohcice during 4 T Kennedys tenure. The bust ol' JFK. sculpted by Felix Der Welden from a special alloy of bronze and brass, radiates a bit of .lFK's charisma. The family donated the sculpture, which was the working model ot' the original artwork displayed in the Kennedy Library in Boston. RearAdmiral tRet.J Earl P Yates, the ship's first commanding officer, painted a compelling portrait of President Kennedy and his daughter, Caroline, which hangs in the cabin. Yates created the likeness of each from two photographs, which are both displayed elsewhere in the cabin.
