Grossgold Conrnranding Officer The officers and men of VAW-124 have heconte intimately familiar with the expression 'iworli hard. play hardi' this 1997 hlediterranean deployment. Periods of intense flight operations followed by restful port calls hest sums up the conditions in which the Bears found tlternselves. Vrllt'-124 and their four ll-ZC Grumman Hawkeyes provided eornntand and control, and hattlespaee uran- agentent for the Carrier Battle Group and Task force Couunanders during several exercises and real world operations During the deployment the Bears operated with aircraft from France, ltaly, Spain. Jordan and other countries in addition to the air wing. ln fact, srnall detaeluneuts of ll-2Cs front VAW-124 were sent to several host nations during multinational exercises. Across the llleditcrranean and Arabian Gulf, the nren of VAW-124 port-ol- ealled llenidornt, Spain to Bahrain, front llaila, lsrael to Roper. Slovenia, the Bears took advantage of every opportunity to see new sights and nteet new friends. This deployment. has been different than rnany others and more challenging in many ways. But, undaunted hy the difficulties, the Bears have eorue out of the deployntent a ntore cohesive team. They have grown together and learned to achieve success regardless of the odds.
