NITVTQHTTIIII CDR Dale E. Carson Navigator The Navigation Departments primary mission is to ensure the ship operates in a safe and efficient manner during transit and maneuvers. Its responsibilities include bridge operations during flight quarters, entering and leaving port, an- choring, restricted waters maneuvers and at-sea replenishment. lt also conducts visual communications with other ships when steaming in convoy. The Naviga- tion Department also manages the ln-port fnon-engineeringl watch organization and ship's ESWS tEnlisted Surface Warfare Speeialistl program. The Signalmen fSMl communicate with other ships visually without using modern communication equipment and can maneuver a task group using only flagsfpennants and flashing lights. The tluartermasters tflllll operate everything from today's most sophisticated Global Positioning System and Omega to the ancient sextant, compass and stars.
