Publishing the newspaper, editing the annual, and preparing for commencement exercises have kept them busy the entire year. Classwork has demanded more serious attention from them as they face college and business careers in the immediate future. What in the world is it? At first they had difficulty in finding their way around and getting to class on time, but soon they were very much at home. They became accustomed to seeing a different teacher each hour and liked the freedom which they experienced. By the end of the year, they were mature enough to choose their high school course. The main project for the year were posting the honor roll for each six weeks and arranging the bulletin board in the front south hall. TIMBER TINTS STAFF The Timber Tints Staff works hard from September until February preparing copy and pictures and soliciting ads for our yearbook, a record of classes, events, and activities of the current school year. The Timber Tints is a member of the Southern Interscholastic Press Association and sends representatives to the convention in Lexington each year. Perhaps the greatest delights are keeping secret the color and design of the cover, the dedication of the annual and seeing the expressions on the faces of the students when the secret is revealed at the presentation ceremony. It has been hard work but it gives the staff a certain pride knowing that they have helped to make this record of the year possible for the entire student body. Bassett High. Of course, those words are referring to the Ben Growl, the school paper. It is pub- lished every two weeks by the staff and their two sponsors. Much time and effort are spent in securing the latest news items, sports articles, edi- torials, features, and drawings. Then with the greatest of care the copy must be prepared and mimeographed. The staff has been delighted with the increase in the sale of papers and is looking forward to publishing a printed paper. However, under the guidance and capable leadership of its director, Mr. William D. Coburn, it came through with shining colors. Much has been accomplished this year toward developing the music ability of its members and in promoting school spirit. The band played at all home football games and the games at Blacksburg, Rocky Mount, and Drewry Mason. They attended the Shriner's Football Game in Roanoke on November 3rd and played in the morning parade and in the halftime mass band formation consisting of 23 bands. They also gave a Christmas concert on December 17th. Besides the regular band there is also the eighth grade and the beginning band. They are working hard preparing themselves for future membership in the regular band. Left to Right: Tena Brown, jackie Roberson, Barbara joyce, Cheryl Gale, Brenda Eanes, Judy Hemdon, Pat Foster. LIBRARY CLUB The library club is made up of a limited number of girls who volunteer to give their services to the library during their study hall classes. This club gives valuable help not only to the librarian but also to the faculty and the students. The club enables the girls to learn more about library work by checking and shelv- ing the books and organizing and filing back issues of magazines. When new books arrive, the girls stamp the books, paste in pockets and date Looking for a book' slips, and type the book and catalog cards. They also stamp and put the time passes and help to keep the library in order. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so to keep the members from becoming dull the club has included many activities and projects. One project of the club is the sale of paper and pencils. The profits have been used for the purchase of new books and a new charg- ing desk. In February the club was hostess to the County Library Club. LITERARY CLUB The main objective of the Literary Club is to create and promote an interest in literary activities. It enables its members to participate in the forensics contests, public speaking, debating, The Debatefs prose and poetry reading, and spelling contests. VARSITY FOOTBALL On August 25, thirty boys turned out for the initial football practice under the guid- ance of Coaches John T. Pegram, Jim Akers, and Curtis Wall. The team started very slowly, losing three of the first five gamesg however, the boys showed much spirit and came back strong to win the last five games ending a very successful season with a 7-3 record. Bassett opened their season at home this year against the Bedford Otters. To the fans' delight, the Bengals took the opening kickoff and marched to a touchdown to lead 7-0. However, the surprisingly strong Otters roared back to defeat the Bengals 34-7. The Bengals evened their record at 1-1 with a 13-6 win over Galax in their next game, following it with an impressive 48-0 victory over Brosville. The next games proved to be two of the toughest on the schedule, and Bassett went down to defeat at the hands of Christiansburg 12-7, and lost again to the Indians of Blacksburg 13-0. With five games left to play the team really found themselves. Everything seem- ed to click for them as they racked up a 28-6 win over Franklin County, in a game high- lighted by an eighty-five yard kickoff return by Bill Collins. In a downpour of rain, the Bengals defeated Halifax County, a Group I school, 21-13. Bassett continued with victories over Fries, Appomattox and Drewry Mason. Bassett Bedford ..................,,.... FOOTBALL The Baby Bengals led by Coach Curtis Wall played only two games this season, but both games were very bitterly fought contests, with the Bengals winning one and losing one. BASSETT VS. DREWRY MASON The Bengals journeyed to Drewry Mason on October 24 to meet the Drewry Mason jayvees. The Bengals scored early in the contest on a beautiful run by Jensie Turner. The conversion was good and Bassett led 7 to 0. Late in the fourth quarter the Spartans scored, but the try for extra points was no good and the Baby Bengals returned home with a 7-6 victory. BASSETT VS. HARGRAVE The final game for the Baby Bengals was played at Hargrave. In this game, again Bassett jumped into the lead scoring early in the first quarter. Although the boys played great ball and led 6-0 at halftime, the superior manpower of the Hargrave squad was too much and the Bengals were defeated 13 to 6.
