Senzor Class History As we stand waltlng to march down the alsle for our graduat1on GXGFCISQS We see before us memorles of the happlest f1V6 years 1n our l1ves It was such a short tlme ago that those of us already at Bassett were Jolned by students from Sanvllle and outh Mart1nsv1lle to become Bassetts second class of elghth graders Although we were very exclted about belng ln hlgh school we were very unsure of ourselves and had only a shaky foothlold Our spon sors were Mrs Beatrlce Goodman Mr Don Rapler Mrs Bertha Coates and Mlss Gladys Ogle We elected Betty Dav1s presl dent and almost burst our vest buttons when Cordle W1ngf1eld was one of the flnallsts 1n the beauty pageant The next fall one hundred and twenty three of us returned as freshmen That year we began to feel as lf we really be lnged We began part1c1pat1ng 1n more school act1v1t1es Our sponsors that year Jones Mlss Nancy Park and Miss Dons Scales Our presldent was Bobby Jovce and our hlghllghts of the year were a h1ll b1lly party and a mmstrel show Followmg summer vacatlon only mnety seven sophomores returned Bobby Joyce was agam elected pres1dent Wlth Mrs Lucy Balley Mr James Coley Mrs Pa tr1c1a James and later Mrs Betty Mlller as our sponsors We presented the play Mamas Gettmg Marmed and that year Mabel Turner was runner up ln the beauty pageant More of us began to par tlclpate 1n sports and club act1v1t1es End mg a dehghtful year our class had a party at Falry Stone Park In the fall school opened Wlth nlnety 1un1ors enrolled Our sponsors were Mrs Beatrlce Goodman Mlss Catherlne Kyle and Mr Albert J Sardelll w1th Bobby Joyce servmg as presldent Enthuslastlcal ly we went to work to g1VE the semors a wonderful banquet and party ln the gym naslum We sold streamers worked con cesslons sponsored partles after football games presented the play The Lzttle Dog Laughed and the George Gobel Vawety Show Proudly we watched the Beta Club tap flfteen Jumors for Beta membershlp Betty Haley was May Day Mald of Honor and Mabel Turner agaln was runner up ln the beauty pageant We ordered our class rmgs and elected the ed1tors of the Tzmber Tmts and Ben Growl to serve ln our senlor year We also elected Jlmmy Ph1lpOtt SCA Presldent for the 55 56 sesslon The next fall seventy sxx of us returned as semors for our h3.pp1eSt and buslest year 1n hlgh school Our sponsors were Mrs Beatrlce Goodman Mrs Ethel Koger and Mr Albert J Sardelh We elected Mason for her Free Enterprlse essay Won a trophy for the school Shelby Brown was chosen captam of the cheer leaders Benny Sharpe football co-cap tam and Irls Mulllns Homecoming Queen The Beta Club tapped one senlor Jlmmle Hendrlx and the nammg of the Vale dlcborlan Patrlcla Johnson and the Salu tator1an Leroy Hamlett was a memorable event for all of us We recelved our class rmgs many of us partlclpated for the last t1me ln school sports and we presented our class play All m the Famzly Our Chr1stmas party and the banquet glven for us by the Junlors were other high l1ghts of the year All these memorles pass through our mlnds as We leave Bassett Hlgh School to become c1t1zens of the world O I 7 7 - . o a Y ' 7 y . s ' ' ' , - 9 . , ' - . 1 ' . .
