The first game September 16 gave Bassett fans , promise of what was to come: We scored in every quarter except the first, defeating Bedford 26-6. On September 21 at the hands of Galax, we suffered our only de- feat. We continued the season with wins over Brosville. Christiansburg, and Blacks- burg. The victory over Blacksburg was especially welcome, as they had given us our only defeat of the previous season. We defeated Franklin, October 12, be- fore an enthusiastic homecoming crowd, and rounded off a very successful season by defeating Dublin, Appomatox, and Hills- ville. We came out second in the District 6 standing, and posted the best record in football that Bassett has ever had. The J. V.'s were not so successful, win- ning two out of five, but gained much valu- able knowledge and experience to help next year. They climaxed the season by competing in the District 6 tournament at Blacksburg as the second-place team. During the first round of the tournament in a tough game the Bengals edged Galax 58- 56 in the last five seconds of overtime. The game in the semi-finals was the death of the Bengals. The fouling-out of four of their first five hit where it really hurt, as the Martinsville Bulldogs held back Bassett's determined threat for a 59-155 Win.
