W ' e must too soon grow old, and then our thoughts will turn, not to the future and what that has in store for us, but backward over the years that have gone. We will live in the refreshing fragrance of old memories — of memories that are priceless in their sw’eetness. When the years have come and each on the wings of time has down, then you will remember. Then may this Timber Tints awaken and bring back to you many happy memories of days that were spent at Bassett High, and, living in these memories, may you still laugh, and love, and live. of Td,G Library of Virc;:;;h VA ADMINISTRATION CLASSES CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS ADVERTISEMENTS ediccUioH TO MR. The vacant desks stood in straight lines like a regiment of soldiers while the well-worn blackboards were as clean as could be having crammed so much knowledge into the minds of students. Suddenly the death-like silence was broken by a rather tired voice! “Alas, another year has passed. Four years I have been stuck to the bottom of this desk. I am tired and will he no good to anyone now. How well I remember the opening of the school term in the autumn of 1 37! Around eighty boys and girls entered this school as freshmen. The very first day one of those daring damsels grew ' tired of working her jaws, thus placing me under this desk. Those students were divided into two tribes w ' ith Calvin Trnon as “Heap Big Chief. The guides were Mr. John Lasko and Miss Anne Hoover. Many war dances ensued that year, but those members came through. Oh, how important they felt when they received their report cards in the spring, stating that they were promoted ' higher ' . The voice w ' as silent a short wTile and continued its reminences; “As the drum beat out the beginning of the second autumn, sixty bright, eager faces appeared, under the leadership of Herman Marshall and John Lasko. Blanche Ratcliffe stepped up to take her place as chief and a happy delightful year followed. To be lower tribesmen, I have never heard of such popular sophomores. They were in practically every club organized. My strength is lessen- ing. Again I must rest. I fear that 1 shall not stay here much longer.” The wad of chewing gum loosened slightly from the desk and after a moment’s pause, heaved a deep sigh and with great difficulty, hut cherished memories, continued the monologue; “ In the fall of ' 40, the Junior Class had as its leader Bill Jones the “biggest chief (in size) of all Shirley Brightwell was the sponsor of the tribe. That was one of the most enjoyable years of all. Carl Plott was the tribes’ scribe with Lonnie Ingram as keeper of the funds. On May 16, 1941, the tribe held a banquet at the Riverside Hotel, honoring their superiors, the seniors. “Then in the fall of 41, Carl Plott, a most worthy and capable young man, with the aid of the sponsor, Bruce Lemons, lead the forty-eight seniors through a successful year. His helpmates were John Bryant, his assistant, Beatrice Thommason, secretary, and Lonnie Ingram, treasurer. Blanche Ratcliffe w ' as editor-in-chief of the ’42 Timbert Tints, and Elizabeth Anne Bowman was editor-in- chief of the school paper, ' Fessor Hoover ' s Gang. The senior council was composed of Carl Plott, John Bryant, Beatrice Thomasson, Lonnie Ingram, Ruth Prillaman, Eubert Clarke, and Paul Spencer. For the first time in the history of Bassett High School, a cheering squad was organized. Those seniors were active participants in Literary Society work, sports and various other clubs. Near the close of their high school life they were the guests of the Juniors at a banquet. That was a very profitable year anci in the spring another group of young people faced the world.’ 4 he voice was again quiet. Its recollections were at an end; its work was done. With a last groan it fell from the desk to the floor to be trampled upon by the students, the coming fall. Elizabeth Anne Bowman Ruth Prillaman QlaH Poem Through the course of everyday life We ' ve met toils, conquered strife, We faced with a smile all of our sorrow Building our hope for tomorrow. When trials came we did not shirk, But went on faithful with our work. Our school days through, we dread to part We ' ll hold these memories in our heart. From our beloved Bassett Hi we must go, And put to use just what we know. This unfinished work we leave to you, Though great be our sorrow. Learn as if you would live forever; and live as if you would die tomorrow. This is the challenge we leave to you. To principal, faculty and classmates , adieu. Carl Vernon Plott Tune: The Band Played On School Days are over; commencement is here, So we ' ll say good-by. Memories will linger of school days dear. In old Bassett Hi. We ' ll boast aloud and will always be proud Our stories of school days to tell. To those who have aided in our success We say Farewell. Now we have come to the end of the way But we ' ll still march on. For we will recall in our minds every day Of our school days gone. Well always endeavor to please you forever. And to dear Bassett Hi we ' ll be true To teachers, and classmates that we hold so dear We bid Adieu. 19 Blanche Ratcliffe Carl Plott Ounix QIqM. It was named in recognition of the achievements of the Athenians during the Golden age of Greece, this being a period in history which has never been surpassed and rarely equalled in culture. This Society has for its purpose promoting the development of moral, the intellectual, and the social capacities of each member, to the extent that the fine arts may be understood and appreciated and that a greater sense of patriotism and virtue may be maintained as signified by the motto of the society which is “Ever on the Upward Trail. At the time of reorganization, October 23, 1941, the society sponsored a membership drive at the end of which the membership total was seventy-seven, this number including both the new and former active and honorary members. The new members expressed a fine spirit of sports- manship by participating in the program of initiation which was planned by the officers and the sponsor. The society presented a number of entertaining and inspirational debates, plays, dia- logues and musicales during the school year. 32 1 - JicdUt QluL OFFICERS John Bryant Alice Jones Mollie Frye Woody Eggleston Lottie Rorrer President Vice President Secretary .... W ' ell, I had to do it! Leaving the office at 7:15 (courtesy Byrd and Company, Retail Jewelers), I hailed a taxi. Was I surprised to find Henry Hoover driving the crate. He said, Where to. Buddy? and I told him to the Lemons’ estate and not to spare the gas. We raced through the streets like a thousand-legged worm and finally came upon Copper Ben Koontz, who was waving his night stick like the frantic guy he is. Then we almost ran into Madame Barnes, world’s greatest pianist, who was touring America on a personal engagement expedition. Was she mad! I laughed like one who listens to Tom Shaw ' s Hello Program, over Station F. L. O. P. We finally passed Tom Thumb Turner’s shoe shop and Marvin Little’s Missing Link chain store. Then I noticed a bright sign, Blanche Ratcliffe singing at the Riverside with Web Martin ' s Orchestra. ” I noticed further that this sign was painted by Eugene Belton, famous artist. After many bumps and knocks in Hoover’s two-bit Taxi, I reached my destination. We were greeted by the butler, David Joyce, who escorted me to the living room where a whole host of world celebrities were gathered. There was Paul Spencer, U. S. Senator; Calvin Vernon, Naval Recruiting Officer; Charles Hayford, famous horse and mule doctor; Harold Carter, P. G. A. champion; John Bryant, famous news columnist; G. T. Craig, well-known playboy; Tyndal Young, can opener saleswoman; Gladys Howard, giving advice to the lovelorn; Elma Moran, Hollywood’s famous child singer; Doris Moran, famous circus actress; Helen Martin, famous religious authority; Eubert Clarke, town’s glamor boy; Woody Eggleston, postmaster; Nancy Richardson, Red Cross Nurse; Ruth Prillaman, dancing star; Elaine Nolan, famous radio comedienne; Beatrice Thomas- son, author of Books on How ' to Cook ; Maxine Jones, famous typist and news lady, and Ruby Jones, famous girls ' coach. Ruby Law was talking continually about her mansion just being com- pleted (located at Patrick Springs). Proceeding into the kitchen, I found Erma and Ora Stone, famous food authorities, preparing burnt offerings. Lois Prillaman was yelling frantically over her famous recipe failing, Agnes Fox, famous heiress, nibbling crackers, was surrounded by a host of admirers, and that daring red-head star of the screen was no other than Carolyn Fulcher. After snooping and smuggling a few snaps of the gay party, I left the back way in order to avoid any last minute rush. I walked into the garden, w ' here the host, Mr. Bruce Lemons, famous biologist, was showing his new ' plant specie to Ernestine Ferguson, Dean of Basset College, and to Zelma Jarrett, well-known dairy owner. Lottie Rorrer, famous and well-known church worker, was explaining the beauty of the specie to Louise Hylton, highly favored cosmetic authority. Later, returning to the office, I found Lizzie in a rage. She was storming about the late edition, which was just off the press. Without having any chance to e.xplain. she roared out like Mt Vesuvius into my ears the w ' ords You’re fired. So, friends, here I am. Anybody got a nickel for a cup of coffee!’ Carl Plott Zfulo f44J The time has come when we must bid “adieu To our teachers and friends who have proven true, Onward we go; each by name, Marching into a field of fame Over the roads of hardship and strife Never faltering through the trials of life, And as we go into this world to take our places. We look back upon the familiar faces Who through toil, love, and cooperation Have led us onward to our destination.
