They told me that I must prophesy, And it should be the work of a sage. But I, a fool more than sage, Will try to reveal your future In our next imaginary age. The Hoto-Hoto scope that reveals your life, Awoke us in a world far remote from evil and strife. 'Tis a thriving metropolitan city, Europa It was to me and all of you, a modern Utopia. I was strolling along on a well-paved street, And one of you I was first to greet. It was Jessie Williams and a gigolo She was trying to let every one know, That she had inherited enough money to get her a beau. She told me that her ambition was to dance and sing, And to marry Jason Giles, who had become His Majesty the King. At the palace His Majesty invited me to sit on his right, And tapped me on the shoulders with his royal sword, Signifying that I had just become a knight. His court jester, Howard White, was quite a clown, He was trying to make the King laugh instead of frown. They invited me to come into the hall, Where Howard was going to teach Jason to pitch a curve ball. His Majesty called for an entertainer to dance and sing. Maxine Philpott was chosen and the subjects' prayers did ring, Their only prayer was, God save the King. And later came in a poor subject, David Flora, Who was a minister and poor to the core. He reached in his pockets and could find nothing but dust, And said, If God wills it, it must be thus. I motored to a distant city to see a world series game, And here I met a ball player who had carved for himself a name. It was Ralph Ingram, who was a catcher for the New York Yanks, He had been voted as the most valuable player in the major ranks. It was the day for the session of Congress and I thought I would attend, There was only one woman taking her place with numbers of men. She was Myrtle Hancock, who was the first woman legislator. Myrtle was working for women's rights and known as The Emancipatorf' A picture was being filmed on a movie set, And in to see it the surging crowd tried to get. I wanted to see the scene and toward the set I was beckoned. There was a love scene being filmed with Melvin Stone playing the leading role and Robert Taylor playing as his second. Through a large hotel window I saw Codell Jones giving herself a toast, And naming the beaux of which she could boast. She was telling of her numerous Hirtations. She said, It wasn't love, they were mild infatuationsf' Passing a stately marble building in the semi-dark I met a small, well-dressed woman whom you know as Marjorie Clark. From many a human heart she had taken a thorn, She was widely known as an authority on advice to the lovelorn. She invited me to come to her office and to meet her guest. In her office were volumes of books to help her in her quest. Violet Richardson wanted to take a love test To find out which of her boy friends she loved best. Then came in a woman, deep in woe, One at this time you would hardly know. She was in love with a traveling salesman and wanted to rush him to a minister Because Minnie Helms was taking no chances on being a spinster. e Class Dronhecy

Ralph Ingram was elected Vice President of Patrick Henry Literary Society. Ellery VVhite and Nellie Philpott were Secretary and Trasurer of Jeffersonian Literary Society. The Beta Club was formed for the first time in Bassett High School, with Mr. Hoover as sponsor. Some of the members who were eligible for membership were: June Stone, who became Vice Presi- dent of the Club, Jessie Williams, who was Secretary and Treasurer, Minnie and Mildred Helms, Edna Joyce, Ruby Seay, Nellie Moran, Virginia Grogan and Howard VVhite. The Home Eckers Club took another trip. They hiked to Glen Eden and cooked their breakfast. Other honors given to Juniors were: Elsie Mitchell, Associate Editor of the school paper, Nellie Moran, Junior reporter. The Junior-Senior banquet was a great feast. The cruise with the Merry Gang was a happy journey enjoyed by all. It happened that certain members of the Class, having been given that one talent of making words rhyme, presented to the passengers a song entitled, Good-bye, Dear Seniors. Also at this time Howard White, as toastmaster, brought honor to himself and his class by his subtle wit. But it was not all glory, wonder and splendor. There were tests, cultivations and the fall plant-- ing and, with all our wisdom, there was often much to be desired. SICNIOR fWlN'l'l-:RJ But even this stage passed on into eternity, the fruit was all gathered and stored away within our memories and, with the snows of all the past in hoary wisdom upon our heads, we welcomed the approach of winter. The flowers have long since decayed, as we outgrew them, and the seeds of the new life-to-be were stored away beneath the soil of our understanding, ready, at the call of the coming spring, to put forth their new shoots and push forth into the new world. Rugged in our young manhood and womanhood, clad in spotless snow and frost protecting the yet immature germs of developing life from the blighting atmosphere, we stand at the end of our course. VVhen we entered, this fall, our last year of school, some of our old members failed to join us. They were Annie Bowles, I.ucy Stone, Edith Seay, Irene VValker and Edward Varner. VVe were joined by one new member, David Flora. The Senior Class elected as their officers: President, Marjorie Clark, Vice President, Virginia Grogan: Secretary, Mildred Helms, Treasurer, Nellie Moran. Miss Shirley Brightwell, a new member of the faculty, came to teach the Senior Class Government. The Senior Class, under the infiuence and never-ceasing care of their beloved teacher, Miss Mildred Akers, again published the 'Frssor lf00-'Ul'f'J Gang weekly in the town paper. June Stone was Editor-in-Chief. The Annual was another great undertaking. Howard VVhite was Editor-in- Chief and Faculty Advisors were Miss Mitchell and Mr. Cooper. A play, Coast to Coast, was presented under the direction of Miss Katherine Burch. Jason Giles was the only Senior who played an important part in the play. Eight Senior girls participated in the chorus. The Seniors had a meeting and elected the following for class honors: Virginia Grogan as Historian, Iloward White as Framer of the Last VVill and Testament, Mack Little as Prophet, Codell Jones as Poet, Jessie VVilliams and Elsie Mitchell as Song Composers. The honor of Valedic- torian was won by June Stone, while the honor of Salutatorian went to Mildred Helms. The Beta Club was again organized with Mr. Hoover as sponsor and Mrs. Bryant, assistant. Many Seniors were members of this honorary club. Howard VVhite became President of the Club. An amateur show was sponsored by the High School at the Stone Theatre. The Senior Class won second prize for their Big Apple dance. A very unusual record, and one which we are proud of, is the entrance of five girls, Nellie Moran, Jessie Williams, Maxine Philpott, June Stone and Virginia Grogan into Bassett High School in the year of 1927 and their continued progress through the grades together until now they have reached the highest point in their school life-graduation. Another record of interest this year is the graduation of five cousins, who are: Virginia Bell Franklin, June Stone, Jessie VVilliams, Nellie Philpott and Maxine Philpott. The Bassett High School Literary Societies were organized. Jessie Williams was elected Presi- dent of General Literary Society and David Flora was elected as Chaplain. On March 18th a Beauty Pageant was given and almost all of the Senior girls were contestants. Miss Mildred Elgin, a seventh grade pupil, was declared Miss Bassett I938. The Beta Club Convention was held April xst and 2d in Roanoke, at the Patrick Henry Hotel. An article written on the Hood by Howard White, of the Bassett Club, was given honorable mention at the convention. Those attending the convention were the following: Jessie Williams, June Stone, Virginia Grogan, Nellie Moran, Marjorie Clark, and Mr. Hoover Csponsorj. The annual Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the Riverside Hotel on March 25th. This year the banquet was in the form of Top Hat Night Club. This event was one that was looked forward to and greatly enjoyed by the Seniors. Now, as we stand at the end of our course it seems a sadder time than we expected. The world outside is cold. VVe know not what to expect from its bleak, bare atmosphere. VVe, the Class of '38, will not wither now that the season of High School Life is at an end, but we will enter into a more yielding season- Real LifC.VLVIRGINIA QIROGAN. C ass l'liSt0l'y

Estelle Prillaman to us confides, She's anxious to get married and decides To answer Yes to the first one who dares To proifer her the honored name he bears. I believe she will and surely can With one sweet smile bewitch a capable man. Mildred Franklin, with cheeks of rose, Came prancing in with beauty to expose. She said, He was such an old model and grew old so fast, But I'll be well rewarded because I'll get a new one at last. Virginia Belle Franklin sent in an order for an economy size, With dimpled cheeks and baby blue eyes. Her order read, This is my first and I may not be fortunate enough to get eleven, I'll treat him divinely because he was sent from heaven. I observed an eccentric and fastidious woman who was immeasurably hard to please She was adorned in a fur coat with large, draping sleeves. She shoved her way to the counter and signed her name as Edna Joyce, I'm sure that she would n-ever be able to pick a suitable husband if she had her choice. Oh, at last, according to my flawless intuition, Ellery White will be an expert beautician. I walked over to see the fashionable coiffeurs she had created And met Arlene Prillaman, who was married and domesticated. Mildred Helms has written a woman's book And into her spacious book store many feminine eyes do look. A handsome price have countless, middle-aged women paid, It was a prize-winning book, How to Keep from Being an Old Maid. The first patron was Eva Young, It seems her first husband had done her wrong. She said, My first husband could get nothing but dregs, But now I want a man who can make golden eggs. I noticed advertisements fiying everywhere, And read of the new sensation that was in the air. June Stone has written a number of books On How Women Can be Good Cooks Without Ruining Their Looks. Sitting in a cream-colored limousine Was the most luxurious sight of which anyone could dream. There was Nellie Philpott, wearing a sable coat and a diamond-studded pin in her hair, For she was the wife of a deceased millionaire. Passing the theater I heard roars and hisses, It was Hope Lcftwich and Dot Hamlin, making their screen debut in 'fLove and Kisses. There was a heart-stirring drama performed on the stage, Featuring Elsie Mitchell and Ruby Seay in Act Your Age. I heard poppings, smackings, crushes and roars, And toward these noises the masses did pour. They were the most savage noises and the most humorous sight I have ever seen, It was Mable Joyce competing for Wrigley's fastest chewing gum queen. What's this, Nellie Moran is going to be a nurse? Well, that's good, I'm sure she might be worse. There's always need for a loving heart and helping hand To care for those whom constant care demands. On the street corner I saw a large, illuminated, neon sign, Virginia Grogan and Reva Shelton's marriage bureau. How you girls will get husbands I think you should know. This sign read, We can get you any husband you want, etc. Q50 and Sol It makes no difference whether you want Larry, Curley or Moe. Riding past the tennis court in a fleeting car, I chanced to see Mack Little in a game with a Wimbledon star. He was not a doctor, preacher and never admitted to take the bar, But he was a tennis player and known as a tennis czar. -MACK LITTLE. - Class Dronhecy
