The baseball strike finally ended. The players were ready to play ball, and the games began on March 27. After several months of protest, the players ended a 32 day lockout. The six week spring training period was cut in ha lf. The lockout closed in mid March. A S100,000 minimum wage and a new pension plan were negotiated issues. Valley businesses suffered from the tourist revenue that was lost during the spring training lockout. A Rose by any other name The baseball legend, Pete Rose, was involved in a controversial situation during the summer of '89. Accused of gambling in baseball, the story was all over the media, and although Rose denied the accusationc the public was upset by the scandal. As a result Rose was banned from baseball for life. The public response varied. Some felt that this was too drastic while others claimed that this wasn't harsh enough! Enjoying themselves at a Cubs vs. Brewers spring training game are Eric Smith and Jon Riggle. Many Corona students who are avid baseball fans were glad to see the lockout over. I think he deserves what he got because he was one of the greatest and what he did really was wrong. He let a lot of people down. said Arnie Gomez. Due to his past achievements another controversy surrounds his possible selection to the Hall of Fame.
