Eighty-Five Years John Carroll University was opened on September 6, 1886 as Saint Ignatius College, Construction started on the present campus in the twenties and was completed in 1935, It was through the generosity of 5,609 patrons, who contributed $2, 541, 382,, that the dream of Fr, Thomas Smith, S.J, became a reality. Since that time, John Carroll has continued to grow both physically and in quality of education. Today, eighty-five years later, John Carroll is faced with the same human and financial prob- lems that all of us must face. The drive and determination that was present in 1886 is still present and will continue to make John Carroll a successful tower of higher education and personal development,
